A Lifelong Fascination with Cowboys

July 23: National Day of the Cowboy

By Calvin LondonPublished 6 months ago 1 min read
Author's image - Yours truly in his cowboy suit!

When I was a little tacker,

Barely a meter off the ground,

I was given a cowboy suit,

And I wore it round and round.

🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠

Two guns, my chaps, a hat to boot,

I felt like I was a man,

Arresting all the evil guys,

Well, at least that was my plan.

🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠

Little boys grow up, and so did I,

My cowboy suit, I soon outgrew,

But my fascination with cowboys,

Continued to be true.

🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠

Every night at four o’clock,

You never had to look far,

There I’d be with the TV on,

The Lone Ranger was my star.

🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠

With his faithful and trusty companion,

They always seemed to win,

Chasing all the bad guys,

They would always bring them in.

🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠

Now I’m so much older,

The fascination still remains,

Good old western movies,

Ideal viewing when it rains.

🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠

I have come to love their music too,

Will Nelson, Brooks and Dunn,

Their music takes me back in years,

To those early days of cowboy fun.

🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠

So nostalgic for me since I was born in 1954. I loved Annie Oakley. Loved this poem!!!

My cousin growing up wanted to be a cowgirl, and she would dress up similar to you. She always said she was going to marry a cowboy, and she married an Indian who looked like a cowboy.

I was always horrified by westerns as a young person, but found True Grit as an adult. I am quite fond of that one and quote it frequently.

  • This is lovely, and we all played cowboys and Indians as kids. I love being an Indian because their outfits and weapons were so much better., although at the time I did not realise the horrors inflicted on the real Americans. Thank you for your poem.
