A Letter To My Codependent Self

I have been in recovery for 44 years, why do I still need to hear this?

Denise,

Take baby steps.

Live in the present moment.

Ask God. Work the steps.

He is an adult. Mind your own business!

The answer is in the steps.

Live and let live! Take this day only.

Work your program. Are you working a step?

Where are we going for coffee? It is your decision.

My job as a sponsor is to work with others on the steps.

The serenity prayer helped me to slow down my thoughts.

Healing came from taking baby steps.

The promises have been true in my life for 40+ years!

The promises are in working the steps?

Fear of people and of financial insecurity will leave us is a promise.

Yes, there are 12 steps, and the promises come by the 10th step!

Go to meetings. Do service.

Work the steps.

I am doing the steps all of the time, by working them with my sponsor and working them with others.

Work with others on the steps.

Okay, I get it!

Happy, joyous, and free and I get this by working the steps.

Some people get recovery through religion. My brother did.

I say do what works. For me, it is the steps.

Some friends and family get recovery through the culture.

I take what I can from other places and work the steps.

There are combinations of these and other ways too.

I will never tell anyone what to do, but I need to work on the steps!

And so do you!
