A Lantern in the Waste

SO(U)L

By C. Rommial ButlerPublished 3 months ago 1 min read
A Hermit by Gerrit Dou, 1661

When we stray too deep

Into the dark night of the soul

We must become our own sun.

<>

If we never sleep

Will we ever walk in dreams

Or dispel the shadowed heart?

<>

If we never break

How will we know we were whole

Or how best to play our part?

<>

O, for Heaven’s sake!

Is this all it sees or seems

Or a fancy of The One?

<>

When we stray too deep

Into the dark night of the soul

We must become our own sun.

This really makes one think about their actions.

  • Well said. During the times we feel alone, we must shine for ourselves, Charles. A wonderful haiku.

There’s something celestial in your tone, as if the poem itself is a quiet conversation between soul and cosmos. The Rommentary deepens that connection perfectly.

Poignantly relevant questions to be asked. They answer themselves brilliantly.

  • Oh wow, this was so profound! Loved your poem so much! Hope you're doing well Rommi

This is beautiful and thought-provoking. It feels both philosophical and comforting at the same time. ☀️

You have to have the darkness to recognise and appreciate the light.

We must, but do we? How often do we seek for the other when we should rather seek for our true selves. Thought provoking and beautifully penned, Rommi! Good luck on the challenge!

  • Beautiful message beautifully written

  • That's haunting Charles; "We become our own sun." We do this to ourselves many a time!
