A Journey of Strength(A Poem About Growing up in London as a Black girl in the 90s)
I had to be strong, I had no choice
In the heart of the city, where shadows play,
I walked through the streets, both night and day.
A young black girl with dreams in her eyes,
Yet faced with the world, where prejudice lies.
With laughter and joy, I danced in the sun,
But whispers of hate would weigh like a gun.
In classrooms and corners, I felt the divide,
A longing for love that I couldn’t confide.
“Go back to where you came from,” they’d sneer,
Words sharp as daggers, meant to instill fear.
Yet in the depths of my spirit, a fire burned bright,
A beacon of hope in the darkest of night.
My hair, a crown of coils, a story untold,
Yet mocked and belittled, I learned to be bold.
With every insult, I grew a new layer,
A shield forged in strength, a warrior’s prayer.
I found solace in sisterhood, voices like mine,
Together we rose, our spirits entwined.
In every struggle, we learned to be free,
Embracing our beauty, our history, our glee.
Through the storms of injustice, I learned to stand tall,
For I am the echoes of ancestors’ call.
Their courage flows through me, their wisdom my guide,
In the face of adversity, I will not hide.
So here I am, a black woman, proud and strong,
With a heart full of love, where I truly belong.
In a world that may judge, I’ll carve my own way,
For I am the future, and I’m here to stay.
