A Friendship Like Ours
The kind that wasn’t supposed to end

Everybody’s heart craves something to beat for
🫀
Some people long for gold to weigh down their wallet
Notes to press into their palms like knives
Numbers to multiply like daisies in bank accounts
🫀
Some people search for spotlights
And the attention that comes with them
Microphones and autographs
And strangers knowing their name
🫀
Some people seek adrenaline
Roller coasters and cliff jumping
Anything that makes their blood
Pump like raging rivers
🫀
Most people crave a cliche
A four letter word repeated so often
It’s almost lost it’s value
Hands holding, lips locking, hearts racing
🫀
I wanted something
Rarer than all of that:
Friendship.
🫀
And I found it
In you
After searching and searching
And sinking further into
My doubt and pessimism
I found you
🫀
You were lost in a book
Sitting between library shelves
And I saw myself in
The way you hid from the world
So I asked to hide with you
And next thing I knew
We were spilling secrets
In the dark of a camping trailer
Miles away from everyone else
And finding comfort in
The spa on the roof of
A hotel escape
🫀
We hid together and
We faced the world together
Side by side and back to back
I drew your sword
You held my shield
We stole every spare second of time
And swore we’d spend it laughing
And we did
Sore stomachs and teary eyes
And minutes flying by like comets
🫀
You were the kind of person
Who rubbed people’s backs
When you hugged
Stroking reassurance into
The uneasiness beneath their skin
I craved your presence
Every time fear stole my breath
Because you were the one
Who could always bring it back
You were my paper bag
My ventolin, my deep breaths
After surfacing from a stormy sea
You were my safety
🫀
Together
We ate endless pizzas
Shared infinite stories
And healed countless wounds
🫀
Together
We caught shooting stars
In the palms of our hands
Swallowed lightning like
It was courage and
Swam through space
As if it were a river
🫀
Together we discovered magic
🫀
I scoured the whole universe
For the kind of friendship
That would save me
And I found it in you
It was the type of friendship
I thought would never end
Until it did
🫀🫀🫀
