A Cup Of Joe
Thoughts Of Her
sunlight cascades through the window
dew drizzles down the window pane
seasons find themselves in limbo
all eyes on the weathervane
coffee steaming on the counter
warm aroma fills the room
Joe comes in, his pace, a saunter
blends in creamer with a spoon
every morn, he grinds the fresh beans
reflects about the way things were
wipes his weathered hands on his jeans
takes a sip and thinks of her
he shuffles through the morning paper
the obits and the cross words page
the ones they used to solve together
missing her fills him with rage
this isn’t how he saw it going
so carefully he planned their path
but as they aged, frailty showing
goodbyes took her far too fast
he takes a sip and looks out the window
blows a kiss up towards the sky
says, “any day now, when the wind blows”
I’ll meet you in the by and by
