A colorful rhyme to pass your time
(A Dr. Seuss-style story)
So, if I’m to be honest, I do tend to hide
Certain aspects of my life that might give me pride.
I am humble and quiet, a true introvert.
But I guess that sometimes speaking out might not hurt.
Up ‘till now I’ve lived life in a way that I’m proud.
And I’ll see if I can tell the story of how
Things have gone well so far under certain parameters
While keeping in anapestic tetrameter.
First off, I feel that I need a disclaimer,
While those in the know now can’t see it much plainer:
My metrical foot isn’t always idyllic
And sometimes it might switch over to dactylic.
But that’s enough waff’ling about because, clearly,
I’ve reached the extent of my poetry theory.
So here’s my attempt to poetically see
Some fun colorful aspects that are about me.
As a kid, I grew up in a loving household.
I had chores such as dusting and laundry to fold.
I had toys to clean up. Made my bed every day.
And with good health, was blessed to help out in some way.
Once old enough and once I’d gained enough weight,
I could donate my blood before it got too late
For the people in need in a hospital bed.
Which is my contribution to the color RED.
But the color of ORANGE is easier still
To explain how an autumnal gourd simply will
Leave a lasting impression that always means somethin’
To Halloween birthday boys who love their pumpkins.
(Here, pause to embrace the dramatic effect
While I use these two lines for a meter reset.)
Now, the next rainbow color is tough for this fellow
To rhyme. And of course I am speaking of YELLOW.
I guess I could mention the beach and what fun
It is to hang around in the sand and the sun.
And since nature’s been brought up, I guess it’d be keen
To develop a rhyme that is based around GREEN.
I recycle, reuse (but not compost) so far
And I drive around in a hybrid plug-in car.
If you look at old photos of my family,
There is something quite in’tresting that you might see:
If you zoom in up close, it might be a surprise…
I’m the only one standing there with two BLUE eyes!
If you’re paying attention here, then you would know
That we’ve made it to calming and smooth INDIGO.
Is it blue? Is it purple? Sort of, but not quite.
But my sister says that it reminds her of night.
With the night overcome and with time marching on,
We are greeted by colors like VIOLET at dawn.
The horizon is breached by the sun in its way
To embrace the earth at the start of a new day.
In these previous lines, I think I’ve gone inside
To an innermost place where I most often hide
Certain aspects of me that I hold to, most dear.
And I write this with no hesitation or fear.
I have stories to tell and have aspects of me
That spark in’trest or peak one’s curiosity.
So, I hope that my silly and colorful rhyme
Was a fun way to pass your most important time.
