Dear 2020,
As the anger fades
Disappointment sinks into my veins
My soul is heavy
Shackled in chains
And only a deep sorrow remains
*
I have been here before
This rage at injustice
That burnt through my core
Yet oddly helpless I feel
As privilege breeds ignorance
Blissful in its indifference
Despite the time had to learn
Now is the time to unlearn
**
'Tis not the act that matters
When it is wrong in principle
'Tis not what happened
But what happens next
When it is wrong in principle
You cannot rationalise or justify
Something unreasonable
Inexplicable and inadmissible
***
I had faith in humanity
Of one world, one race
Often tested in adversity
When unjust and unfair
I fear for humanity
Divided and scared
****
But as a new sun rises
A new hope dawns
With love and understanding
I stand
To face and fight the fear
For it may not be for our time
But for future generations
I will persevere
*****
Sincerely, the people who choose to stand against racism
