Why Do Cats Knead?

Kneading To Mark Territory

By Jenifer LorasPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Kneading is a repeated, rhythmic motion during which cats force their paws into and out of a soft surface, switching between paws. Cats enjoy kneading on soft surfaces like sheets, pillows, soft carpeting, a person's lap, or a sofa. No one can describe exactly why cats knead their human family members, but there are some convincing theories available.

Kneading To Mark Territory

Kneading your sofa or your lap might be your cat's way of marking their territory. Cat paws have scented glands that secrete the distinctive scent of your cat. Owners might not be able to smell it, but other cats can.

Kneading an owner or a comfortable place is often a subtle way for your cat to tell other cats to stay away. You can prevent this activity by offering an effective scratching post to your cat. Reward them when they use it so that they realize that this is where they should knead.

Going Into Heat

Female cats can knead when they go in heat. They can exhibit other behaviors along with this, such as being excessively noisy, showing more affection than normal, and demanding to go outside.

Neutering or spaying may reduce these behaviors if they are associated to the oestrus. Also, neutering can help prevent unwanted pregnancies and also prevent some diseases.

It's Related With The Warmth Of Being A Kitten.

Kittens knead their mother's mammary glands in order to help them squeeze out more milk. As a kitten matures, kneading can still be associated with a sense of comfort even if there is no food reward.

Showing their Love and Appreciation

It is probable that kneading is also a way of expressing happiness and trust. If kneading is problematic, either because you're wearing a precious garment or because those little claws are causing pain, lift the cat up gently and put it down somewhere else, cozy and comfortable.

Kneading Might Mean Attention

At occasions, you may have found your cat purring as they knead. In these situations, your feline companion may just be trying to get your attention. They might be hungry, they might want to go out or they might want to sleep on your lap.

Kneading is instinctive for cats and gives them a lot of pleasure. Unless the kneading behavior is genuinely upsetting, let your cat knead in peace and embrace it.
