The Adventures of Delilah and Luna #2
Foster Dogs in their First Foster Home
The Adventures of Delilah and Luna at the Horse Farm
Delilah and Luna woke up in their new Foster Home. Their mommy left somewhere, and they don’t know where she went. But they don’t seem to mind so much, they are with their doggy friends, Blaze and Shadow. They are just eager to explore their new day and new home.
Delilah and Luna get up from their doggy beds. They look around and smell new smells. They hear a strange sound coming from outside the house. It is muffled but loud at the same time. (bray). They wonder what it is.
With their noses up in the air, they follow the smell and the sound. They are getting close because the smell is getting stronger. They hear the sound again even louder. NEIGH!!! and they notice the HUGE, SMELLY, LONG-TAILED, FOUR LONG LEGS ANIMALS. Delilah looks at them with a tilted head. What are they?
The animals have long, thick necks. You can hear a loud “SNORT” coming out of their noses while chewing on some weird food that looks like brown, hard grass. Delilah and Luna wondered. What type of animals eats that? Delilah and Luna are super excited. They want to go out and explore the “new” animals.
Before they could bark for the foster humans, Cherie and Bob, Delilah and Luna smell a familiar smell. FOOD! Delilah and Luna run towards their bowls drooling. Their tongues hung out of their mouths as they saw Cherie place their bowls on the floor with their food. Delilah and Luna went to their bowls to eat their food when Blaze and Shadow came up from behind.
Blaze and Shadow didn’t like that Delilah and Luna were eating their food first so close to their dog bowls as well. Shadow was the oldest and biggest dog. Blaze was his little doggy sister. They are Delilah and Luna’s doggy friends. Shadow and Blaze don’t like any dog near their food. Shadow and Blaze get mad. Shadow begins to bark at Delilah and Luna.
Delilah and Luna continue to eat. They ignore Shadow and Blaze. Shadow goes up to Delilah and nips on her neck. Delilah is surprised.
Delilah turns around and barks at Shadow. Blaze barks at Luna. Luna keeps eating. Blaze puts her two front paws on Luna’s back. Luna turns around and barks at Blaze. Delilah gets angrier. She tries to protect Luna and bites Blaze to leave Luna alone. Shadow gets mad and bites Delilah which gets Luna mad. All four dogs are now biting and growling at each other. It was a big doggy ball of chaos. Cherie and Bob come down and grab the dogs.
Cherie grabs Blaze and Shadow. Bob grab Delilah and Luna. Blaze and Shadow calm down and sit down next to their mommy each on one side of her. Delilah is still mad and growling at Shadow. Luna barks everywhere.
“We can’t have these dogs in the house anymore,” says Bob. “They are big bullies.”
“Poor Blaze and Shadow. Look at them. They are shaking and lying down by my feet. Those girls are bad dogs. Leave them with the horses outside. They can sleep in the cage. We will let them out when they need to go to the bathroom. Feed them while they are in the cage, but they are no longer allowed into the house,” says Cherie. Bob nodded in agreement.
Bob got Delilah and Luna’s leashes. Delilah and Luna get excited thinking they are going for a walk.
Bob takes Delilah and Luna outside with the big animals. What did Cherie call them HORSES? That is what those animals are called Horses. Is that who was making the noises?
Delilah and Luna get really close to one horse. It was HUGE. Delilah and Luna were tiny compared to the horse. Delilah was tall enough to reach below the horse’s knee. Luna was short enough to reach the middle of the horse’s cannon. It was brown with a long black tail. The tail swayed side to side as the flies tried to get to the horse’s back. It had white spots on its hooves. Its ears moved around listening to all the sounds of Bob opening the cage that was next to the horses’ stall.
Delilah and Luna stayed still in awe staring at the horse. The horse bowed its head to them to say hello and snort at them. Delilah and Luna just sat watching the horse. The horse neighed. Delilah and Luna wagged their tails. That was the noise they heard before. These ARE the animals that were making the noises. When suddenly Bob yanked them by the chain and threw them into the cage. He locked them in and told them they were to stay there.
Delilah and Luna were confused. Why were they in this cage? They thought the day was going to be a good day. Cherie and Bob must be very mad. They laid down and cried for most of the morning. Delilah and Luna hoped that later they would be able to go back to the house.
In the afternoon, Delilah and Luna saw Bob come back to the cage. They were jumping up and down. They were excited. Bob let them out to run around on the horse farm. Delilah ran through and between horses’ legs making the horses neigh and trot to avoid Delilah from hitting them. Luna followed. Delilah jumped into a ditch and played with the water in the ditch. Luna followed. They ran and ran everywhere. They were happy and playing.
Delilah and Luna got tired and hungry. They went back towards the house thinking they will be allowed in. Cherie saw them at the glass door. While pointing at them, she said something to Bob. Delilah barked to be let in. Luna whined but they were only greeted by Blaze and Shadow growling angrily at them. Delilah and Luna see Bob come to the door. They tried to squeeze themselves inside, but Bob stopped them. He dragged them back to the cage next to the horse’s stall.
In the cage, Delilah and Luna found food and their beds and a big fan. They were very hungry. They ran to their bowls and gobbled up their food. But while they were eating, Bob locked them in again. The sound of the gate closing to the cage scared Delilah and Luna. Delilah and Luna ran to the gate and whined to be let out. But Bob left them there alone with the horses. Delilah and Luna waited for hours. But Bob or Cherie didn’t come back out.
The sun went down and it is nighttime. It was still very hot outside. Summers in Florida can be very hot. Luna started to howl. She was very hot. Bob came outside again and opened the gate. Delilah tried to dart out by him but Bob caught her by the collar and dragged her back in. He turned on the fan that was inside the cage with Delilah and Luna. Bob took the doggy food bowls out of the cage and gave them water for the night. He leaves and closes the door again. He looks at Delilah and Luna and says, “Now, be quiet and go to sleep.”
Delilah and Luna lie down looking vey sad. They watched Bob go back to the house and turn off all the lights. The horse next door to Delilah and Luna softly neighed them to sleep. There were a lot of scary noises at night that would wake up Delilah and Luna. Every time they woke up, the horse next door would neigh them to sleep.
Poor Delilah and Luna! They stayed outside living in that cage for a very long time. Every day was the same routine. They would get out and play then back to the cage. No one to cuddle with. No one to pet them and say nice things to them. The only time they were happy is when they were let out of the cage to play in the ditches. Play with the horses and romp in the grass with the butterflies.
Delilah and Luna always looked forward to leaving the cage. It was fun.
The cage was scary and lonely. Delilah and Luna had each other but they really missed their mommy and their other doggy sister. Lilly. When will mommy come back? When will they be able to go home?
Delilah and Luna just cuddled up together in the cage and dreamed of their mommy coming back. Going back home to the nice cool house. Getting loads of cuddles and pets. Playing with their toys happily at home. Maybe tomorrow????

Parent/Child Discussion
Blaze and Shadow bullied Luna and Delilah. Bullying means someone picking, teasing, bothering you for no reason. Have you had anyone bully you?
There are many types of horses. Have you ever seen a horse before?
Do you know where your forearm is on your body?
Where is your knee?
How would you feel if you were Luna or Delilah?
