Pets are strange sometimes. To many people, pets are their children. Some people dress them up. Some people carry them around with them wherever they go. Some people have endless photoshoots with their pets commemorating their lives. And some people go to extremes that I can't even bring to mind at the moment.

Adjusting to Life Without a Pet
I had never lived a day without a pet. Before I was born, my parents had already adopted a dog they named Jackson. Jackson was a beagle-basset hound mix. He was black with white splotches. From what I understand, he was a bit of a handful. My parents have told me a story where he had eaten an entire thing of Vaseline and, the next morning, regretted it. When my parents brought me home, he wasn't sure how to handle it. I'm sure it didn't help that when I learned motor control, I would pick on him by tugging on his floppy ears. Then, as Jackson and I aged, we became the best of friends. By the time I had reached the fourth grade, he very much became my dog. He slept in my room, typically on my clothes. I fed him, let him outside, and played fetch with him. In his old age, he became a grumpy old man. Of course, I'm assuming this is due to the fact that we had adopted another dog who is a psycho towards any other animal. Anyway, Jackson began to only tolerate the rest of my family, but his love for me remained the same until he passed away.

Why, On an Abstract Level, I’m Against Pets
People like to criticize PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, because of how many animals they euthanize. These armchair critics would have us believe that PETA euthanizes them because they don’t care about animals.

A Pet's Life
Being a cat owner since I was born, I was brought up living with a variety of different breeds of cats. Although learning to love dogs, there is something special about having a companion. Even for younger kids, their companions could be anything, but learning to love a living animal could help them in later life.

My First Cat
I remember getting my first cat when I was about four or five years old. I don't remember where my mom got it, or if someone gave it to her, but I was happy to have a pet I could play with; we already had at least one dog, but I don't remember ever playing with them even though one would beg for food during meals in our tiny kitchen; my mom or anyone else would throw scraps of tortilla or even a whole tortilla out the kitchen for the dog(s) to go eat outside. We didn't know to treat pets the way people do in the United States.

When You Say Goodbye
Why can’t you keep him forever? Why do you only have him for just an inkling of your own lifetime? It’s not fair. You have found that perfect little four-legged, furry creature that has stolen your heart and you just don’t know why he won’t be with you forever. It’s so hard to have to say goodbye to them.

Cats In the Cradle Means a Man In the House
As a young child, the cats in my house were a couple of pet rabbits. That was simply the best I was going to do. A dog was clearly out and my mother was allergic to cats (which all moms say when their kids pine for a pet). But my senior year in high school had my mom unable to say no to a precocious little cat named Tiffany. Here, I began to receive my education on the merits of a cat's meowing.

Doggie Days
I've always loved dogs. From a young age, I was endeared with the soft, cuddly animals that provide unconditional love. However, there was a strict 'no furry pet' rule at my house, largely due to my father. Therefore, I was denied the love of a dog that I so dearly craved.

Best Pet Charities in New York City
New York City is one of the greatest cities in the world - as long as you're not one of the many animals who live in the mean city streets. Sadly, there's a bit of a stray epidemic going on in New York City, and many pet charities in town aren't actually doing much to solve the problems animals face.
