dog
It's no coincidence that a dog is a man's best friend; they're more faithful than most other animals, and more faithful than many people.
Sinbad and Caesar found us
When we moved to Darwin in Australia's top end (the Northern Territory), my father wasn't expecting us. Mum rented a sparsely furnished house on stilts then phoned Dad to tell him we'd landed from Sydney. When I say "we", I mean Mum, me (I was seven), my brother (4) and my sister (1).

A Manhattan Princess
Princess Ella Montrose did not start off her life as a princess but she knew that it was her fate to become one. She was born on the island of Cozumel where her first owners were oblivious to her true status, they treated her as less than royal, less than a being of any worth, less than a dog. She was beaten, tied up, & left to fester. Befitting her royal blood, part of her remained impervious to this treatment, she bided her time, fully aware that though born of such humble beginnings her true lineage would soon become evident to all.

Furfriend Furever
I had only recently moved to Tennessee. I was struggling as a teacher, a person, and a human. I had great doubts and was weighed down by my desire to do great things. I found myself constantly at war with some form of societal blindness or decadence. Down here, dogs are commonly left forgotten or abandoned. At first, I tried looking through adoption sites. Many of them offered adorable dogs but were either too far away or too expensive. I had just moved! I could not afford $5,000 for a dog. I wanted to so spend every cent I had to recuse those sweet caring eyes. Some were scams and demanded the money up front without scheduling a visit or get to know you phase.

A Best Friend I Never Deserved
As I sit to write this, I am more than aware of the uncomfortable road down which this memory will take me. I was not a good dog owner. I wasn’t a bad owner either: Beryl had shelter, space, food, insurance, regular vaccinations, and regular veterinary care. What I did do was take her for granted and, ultimately, did not show her the love she deserved.

Holly's Haven
"No. We don't need another dog." With that confirmation, my heart sank all the way to the basement beneath me as my Dad's voice rang true and final. I returned the phone to my Mom before I shuffled off to my bedroom in the devastating defeat of a seven-year-old's well structured argument.

A Foster Failure
Let’s face it, making friends is difficult and seems to get more difficult with age. Children deserve a lot of credit for truly streamlining the friendship process: walk onto the playground, find a kid, show them your red Power Rangers toy, and you’re in. As an adult, this gets complicated by factors that suddenly seem to matter. We’re tired and anxious- do we really have it in us to risk it all on a coworker that seems like they may be a fun addition to our weekend hike? There is a risk-to-payoff assessment that we make every time we decide to engage with a new friend and dogs are no different.

Charlie and Beatrice
Some years ago, my friend Jennifer acquired a beagle called Beanz. Beanz had belonged to an American family who were returning home and could not take her with them. She was a large, ponderous, matronly, sneaky dog who lived solely for delectation of food. Having said that she was in fact quite a nice girl who happened to love her tuck a little too much.

Feisty The Stray Dog
"Auntie" "Auntie" is all I heard when my nephew came running through my front door. I immediately assumed something happened to my son over at the park because he wasn't behind my nephew when he came crashing through the door so I in return looked at him and screamed what! "Is everything ok with Keiandre? As my nephew came closer to approaching me right before my eyes appeared a little beautiful two toned mixed breed white and light brown doggy that needed a full bath.

Nacho's Life
It all began with a beg, then a plead, then a cry from our kids. "We want a dog, please?" "We will do anything you want if you get us a dog." My husband and I sat there looking at each other trying to figure out the best way to say no to them. We asked them to give us some time to think about it. My husband admitted he was ready to get a dog again after the last incident with rescuing a dog. I was still unsure; my heart was still broken. I wasn't sure I would be able to love a dog again. In the end, we agreed to go to the Humane Society to just look to see what they had available. Little did we know how doomed we were.

Don’t Shoot!
My husband was going to shoot him when we first saw him on the monitor. John was by no means a hunter. Or a killer. Although he had killed chickens before I met him. To feed the three growing boys he had with his first wife. At that time, they could not afford to buy meat at a grocery store. Now that he was doing better financially and all his children were grown with their own families, John sees no necessity in killing to eat. He prefers to let someone else do the killing. It was not something he enjoyed doing.
