dog
It's no coincidence that a dog is a man's best friend; they're more faithful than most other animals, and more faithful than many people.
Sweet Pups: An Interview
A few months ago, my sister, Janis, decided that she was going to adopt a dog of her own. It was a long process because her apartment’s landlord usually has restrictions that prohibit residents from keeping pets. However, thanks to approval from a doctor, they made an exception for her to adopt a pet. By this point, she decided on who she was going to adopt: a foxy rat terrier puppy named “Angie” who was renamed “Zelda” after a character from the “Legend of Zelda” series of games. Then came the day of adoption and I joined Janis to cross state lines into Massachusetts to take Zelda home.

A Last, Lasting Memory
My most cherished moment with my Catahoula was her last. I lied my belly on the cold tile of the vet office, face to face with Roxy while she rested on her favorite blanket. I pressed my forehead to hers, holding her paws while a final drug injected into her vein. Her last, deep breaths brushed across my nose in a warm wash. I kissed her snout, tears falling to dance down her fur. Roxy's big eyes closed peacefully.

Jaik-Jaik “Da Baby”
Jaik-Jaik “Da Baby” is a dog of his own reconnaissance. When he runs outside of the house, he simultaneously relieves himself on our flower box and keeps his eyes peeled for the huge German shepherd down the street. Once Jaik knows his archrival is nowhere in sight, and his bladder is almost empty, he waits for me to put his leash on so we can take our walk. Our walks vary and depend solely on whether Jaik wants to empty the rest of his bladder around the corner at the Corgi’s house OR further up the street where his girlfriend Luna the Husky lives. Finally, once he has made his decision between Corgi or Husky, he sits down and puts his paw up. This lets me know, the unaware human, that he is tired and would like to walk back home. It is clear this dog knows what he wants and is very aware of how to ascertain his daily rituals of comfort. Therefore, the fondest memory of Jaik-Jaik is one that falls in place with his character. It was the summer of 2020. I was not feeling well, and Jaik decided that he needed to walk me.

Greta
I remember the last time I saw my best friend. She was curled up on the floor, laying in her doggy bed, subdued from her illness. I had trouble processing a lot of what was going on as I laid down with her. She had been in our family for years at this point and her sickness came on quicker than I had realized while I was away at college. Tons of memories would flood back, knowing I didn’t have a lot of time left with her.

Our Miracle Buddy
Leo was my miracle little buddy. He was a clingy little guy that grew up with lots of hugs and love, something in short supply during the global pandemic. During that dark period, many of us questioned whether seeking an emotional connection with others was possible. When Leo’s owner suddenly passed away, he became despondent. Leo lost his appetite, and the surviving husband expressed little desire to meet Leo’s health and emotional needs.

I cradle a dear friend
I cradle a dear friend while the sun shines on us. My back is against a stucco wall that forms one border of a terraced fruit orchard. It’s late fall, so the leaves are dying, yet the sun radiates heat and makes it feel more like late summer. Hummingbirds titter in the branches and a soft breeze stirs the dry leaves so that they rustle lightly. The ground is littered with fallen leaves that fold and curl in on themselves.
