dog
It's no coincidence that a dog is a man's best friend; they're more faithful than most other animals, and more faithful than many people.
Dante Thomas Wentingworth
I leave my car and rush for the rotting wooden stairs leading up to the sliding glass door I've entered through since I was a young child. My chest is tight with sorrow and trepidation, but it does not stave my hand from gripping and pulling at that door, pushing my way inside, and pushing back the sob that pulls at my throat.

Nose
A few years back I found myself standing along the east bank of the Catawba river near Belmont, North Carolina. It was a chilly December morning, and a light mist was in the air that soon turned into a cold drizzle. I took shelter under the railroad trestle and watched the rain come down. I had packed a lunch in a brown paper bag which consisted of a turkey sandwich, some carrot sticks and an apple. I found a nice dry spot and started munching on the carrot sticks when I noticed a skinny brown dog standing in the reeds by the riverbank, eyeing me carefully. He was a mutt with perhaps a terrier ancestry. I whistled softly and his head cocked to the side and his ears popped up like a couple of flags at a carnival shooting gallery. I motioned for him to come closer, which he did carefully, not trusting me, but at the same time sniffing a morsel and hoping to partake of my generosity.

A Legendary Dog
We gave him a gentleman’s name, but he was a bit of a renegade. As a surprise one day, our mom and dad brought home a six-month old puppy. He was a little, wooly ball of energy and my brothers and I were overjoyed. He was our first family dog and we argued over whose turn it was to pet and cuddle him and most of all to name him. I forgot who came up with the name Dudley, but it was unanimous that the name suited him perfectly.
