Pit bull—now take a moment and think about those two words. I bet you think mean and scary. In reality pit bulls aren't mean and scary. Pit bulls should be kept as pets because they used to have a good reputation, the media is unfair, and there are outdated laws against pit bulls.

There are many outdated laws prohibiting pit bulls in some cities. Paragraph one of "Ohio Overturns Pit Bull Bill" states, "The Ohio State Legislature voted today on a bill to eliminate a 25-year-old law automatically declaring pit bulls as vicious." This shows how Ohio has thought about the bill and that pit bulls aren't the same as they were 25 years ago. Paragraph one of "Miami-Dade County Votes To Keep Pit Bulls Out" says, "In 1989, the county instituted a ban on pit bulls." The county voted 28 years ago on this law which is longer than the Ohio law. Ohio changed their position so why hasn’t Miami-Dade county changed theirs? All these laws against pit bulls are so outdated. Pit bulls have changed over the years.

The media treats pit bulls unfairly. In paragraph three of "The Media And The Pit Bull" it says, "The media intentionally over reports incidents involving pit bulls, while keeping silent on attacks committed by dogs with a better reputation." The media doesn’t care about dog attacks unless committed by pit bulls. Also, in "The Media And The Pit Bull" it says, "Other breeds of dogs can and do attack people, these incidents go unmentioned in the news, even at local level." People think pit bulls are the only ones that attack because they are the only ones that get in the news. The media targets the pit bull and I rarely hear of another breed attacking a person. The media is cruel to the pit bull.

In the past, pit bulls use to have a really good reputation. Paragraph two of "Pit Bulls Haven't always Had a Bad Rep" says, "When the first pit bulls were brought to America by English and Irish immigrants, they were a respected breed." Pit bulls used to have a ton of respect by man, but when did it all go away? Also "Pit Bulls Haven't Always had a Bad Rep" paragraph four states, "Stubby was the unofficial mascot of the 102nd Infantry Division. He once saved his entire platoon by warning them of a poison gas attack." A pit bull didn’t kill or hurt anyone, he saved them. Pit bulls were so respected and honored back then. Pit bulls are nice and loyal, but people think they are bad. However, the owner greatly influences how his/her pet should act.

Some people say pit bulls are the choice for drug dealers, but they are wrong. Peta.org talks about how drug dealers commonly use Dobermans, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Staffordshire terrier. Pit bulls should be kept as pets because pit bulls use to have a good reputation, the media is unfair and there are outdated laws against pit bulls. I say we keep pit bulls!

Pit bulls aren't even a breed of dog they are just classified as that. Yes, people may say pit bulls have a certain look, but the truth is that could be the most loving dog that exists. I read a book once and a guy owned such a loving dog, but one man did not like this guy so he called his friends who work for animal control and told them to mark the dog as a pit bull even though the vet that worked there did not agree.
