Tama was a stray cat who had been living near the station, cared for by the local station manager. When the railway company decided to remove staff from the station, the manager made a heartfelt request: let Tama stay. The company agreed, and Tama was officially appointed as Station Master in 2007.

In 2007, a stray cat Tama was adopted as the Super Station Master at Kishi Station in Kinokawa, Japan, on the Kishigawa Line of the Wakayama Electric Railway. but after Tama's appointment as stationmaster helped revive the station and the surrounding area into a tourist attraction, drawing tens of thousands of visitors a year and contributing significantly to the local economy.

Dressed in a tiny station master's hat, Tama greeted passengers with her calm demeanor and adorable presence. Word spread quickly, and soon, people from all over Japan traveled to Kishi Station just to see her. The station, once on the brink of closure, became a tourist attraction. Ridership increased by 17% in the first month alone, and Tama's fame continued to grow. Tama's presence at the station increased passenger numbers by 17% and contributed approximately 1.1 billion yen to the local economy.

The railway company embraced Tama's popularity, launching Tama-themed trains and merchandise. In 2008, she was promoted to Super Station Master, her popularity led to her being promoted to various titles, including Acting President of Wakayama Electric Railway and Ultra Stationmaster. With a title that came with her own office and a private litter box. The economic impact was undeniable - Tama had saved the railway line.

The station was renovated in 2010 to have a distinctive cat-shaped roof, and a Tama-themed café and train were introduced. 

Tama continued her duties until her passing in 2015 at the age of 16. The station held a 50-day mourning period, and she was honored as Honorable Eternal Station Master. Her successor, Nitama, took over, ensuring that Tama's legacy lived on.

Tama's legacy continues to attract visitors to the station and the Kishigawa Line.

Today, Kishi Station remains a beloved destination, thanks to a stray cat who turned a struggling railway into a thriving attraction. Tama's story proves that sometimes, the most unexpected heroes come with whiskers and a gentle purr.
