Our Messed Up Pets
Part 1 told of a cat with unresolved anger issues and severe separation anxiety. In Part 2, I will tell of an orange tabby named, Happy, who was almost nothing like Dopey. When my middle child was turning 3, she received the little guy for her birthday. She had medical challenges that were manageable, but still a lot for her and the family, and Happy seemed to understand that dynamic from the very first day. The 2 of them were almost inseparable, as if conjoined by fate.

Ever since I rescued her 10 years ago, my dog Lenya has been the most important part of my life. It’s been her and I on our own this entire time. People have come and gone throughout the past decade, but Lenya has stuck close by through it all. Through thick and thin we have been a team. That kind of designation means her safety and overall well-being is my number one priority. She deserves the best of the best.

Our furry friends mean more to us than they’ll ever know! When I adopted my first dog, Ducky, I had no idea what being a pet owner would truly entail. When I brought Ducky home from the animal shelter, he had a case of Mange which meant I had to give him baths everyday with a special shampoo that would kill the parasite. If you aren’t familiar, Mange is a type of skin disease caused by parasites that tends to cause hair loss, lesions and itching on the skin in dogs. After a few weeks of his special shampoo baths, the Mange subsided and I swore that I would do everything possible to make sure my sweet pup would never have to suffer through another nasty bug like that again.

This image, for example, is utterly beautiful to me—not only because I love wildlife and was honored to be able to get so up close and personal with them—but because I was able to save a shared moment in time between myself and my near-adult son.

A Cat's Life for Me
I have been writing for many years since the age of thirteen, but I have only been a cat owner for around seven months. What happened? Why did I suddenly need a black kitten called Dottie? I am not sure, I think I started with 'let's get a kitten because my Nana used to own cats and I miss her,' and she was followed by another black and white girl from the RSPCA called Holly, followed by 'I'll donate monthly to Cat's Protection, who kindly send out quarterly magazines and then another kitten, a boy for Mother’s Day, followed by 'I'll get my girls published in the Cat's Protection magazine!'

Suckerpunch
Peering behind the trunk of the big cherry tree, I tried to stay hidden in the tall grass so I wouldn’t be spotted by the mighty beast named Suckerpunch. Yes, that is his real name. No, I did not name him. Yes, it is a well-deserved name. He doesn’t belong to me, but I do live with him. He belongs to my best friend and roommate who was very naïve and believed the guy when he said “ Oh, he’ll stay small, not much bigger than this size”. Let me tell you, if ever you are buying a pet DO NOT take people at their word. I’ve learned this the hard way, many times. My friend, however, did not.

The unexpected birthday trip
okay so here we are. It’s a week out in advance of the date I’m about to share, and I’m told to be up and ready by 10am on 6/26. That is my birthday! I ask how should I dress? I was told dress comfortably. Hmmm, what type of comfortable? I was told comfortable and for the type of weather we’re having. Okay. The weather is hot. So after changing outfits a few different times. I finally settle on this comfortable and stretchy light wash blue jeans and kinda dressy pale pink tank blouse. Along with cute matching sandals. Let’s go!!! We get in the car. I’m told we’re meeting my mother and sister, they’re following us to the destination. Awesome, the more the merrier! We meet them and now we’re back on the highway driving, and driving, and driving. Ummm...how much longer do we have?, I ask. See I really dislike road trips. I know, I know. I’m sorry, but I just do! Just a little bit more, I’m told. Awww man. So roughly after about a little bit over more than two hours of unexpected travel on the highway, we reach our destination. I read the sign: Aloha Safari Zoo. My daughter who planned this trip knows how much of a animal lover I am, so this turned out to be one of those it’s worth it road trips, lol. Other than the fact that I’m not really dressed for the zoo, but it was perfectly fine. We gather, pay and enter. We began to walk along the tour path and view the animal exhibits. Yaay, I’m loving the interactions with all of these beautiful animals, when I see of peacocks running around. My whole body smiles from the inside out. I love all animals, but peacocks are truly one of my favorites! I snap some photos of this particular one that’s been staying pretty close to us throughout the trail, but I’m not fully satisfied as the feathers weren’t spread out. I’m a human so it’s understandable. If you know you know, lol and if you don’t here it is, peacocks are male pea fowl and usually spread their feathers as a way to attract a mate. we continue further along throughout the trails and exhibits. We come across one of the most ginormous horses in America, kept right here at this zoo, Cool! There’s zebras, monkeys, lions and tigers, even bears! At this point we’re all beginning to tire down and need food and rest. We go to their onsite caffe and grab a bite to eat along with some refreshing drinks. We definitely needed it. Did I say it was hot? Well anyway while we’re sitting in the dinning area we notice there’s chickens roaming around us! This place is like a one for all, and I wasn’t complaining one bit about it. One of my daughters even held one of the chickens, she’s a brave soul. After refueling ourselves we continue on for the remaining half of the zoo tour. As for myself, I’m still thinking how nice it’d be to capture the beauty of the peacocks feathers. We end up coming across a section where the peacock seem to like to hang out, perfect I think to myself. I can finally get my shot! Since all of my other shots were with the feathers close. They roam around the zoo freely here. So while we were trailing, I was clicking. Unfortunately, to no success for the picture I wanted. Anyhow, my familiar peacock friend from earlier was right there amongst us again in this particular area they seem to like. I walk over, I begged and plea pleeeeeease open you feathers. It’s my birthday, you’re so beautiful I want a picture. Nope, nothing. We then walk over to an exhibit to look at some monkeys. awe, so cute! Then I hear one of my daughters yell, mom look! I quickly turn and what do I see. The peacock has its feathers spread open!!! I’m so overly joyed! Finally! This is what I’ve been trying to get all day. I walk over and I capture some beautiful pictures of my peacock friend. I’m now content. I thank him for allowing me to capture his beauty. We wrap up our tour. As we prepare to leave we give hugs and say our goodbyes. My daughters and I reflect on the events of the day during our journey back home. I really hate road trips, but this definitely was one trip well worth it. For my birthday I spent time with my family and some amazing animals, and got the shot of my peacock friend.
