The Chicken Thief
I could not remember the last time I tasted food. Had I ever been fed? Did these foolish humans ever think about my needs? Hardly. Despite my constant reminders, loud ones mind you, they always assured me 'You've already been fed! Stop trying to lie. You can't fool us!'

Chickens are Dumb, Right?
Chickens are dumb, right? Think again. My chickens not only answer to their names but they have an innate sense of when they can escape their yard to forage in the garden. Indeed, White-tail has a habit of waiting for the right moment to nip into the laundry, up the stairs, and into the kitchen… not waiting for us to bring scraps out.

Help! My Dog Has A Heart Murmur
You're at the veterinarian for an annual checkup with your Pomeranian. Your vet has just finished listening to your pet's heart when they look up and mention, "Fluffy has a heart murmur." You are immediately worried. Anything to do with the heart sounds bad. You can feel your own heart rate picking up as you listen to what your veterinarian is discussing. You try your best to understand what they are saying, but you're quickly losing focus. Is a heart murmur bad?

Ouch! Stinging Insects
Every summer I look forward to family gatherings, outdoor barbecues and fun by the pool. And every year without fail, wasps seem to get the impression that they’re invited to all of these outdoor functions. Not only am I frightened that the wasp may sting our precious Luna, but wasps pose a serious health risk to our families.

Dogs of the Big Screen: 5 Must-Watch Dog Films
Dogs make for some of the most iconic movie characters, especially in dog-led films. Canine-centric films have us laughing, sobbing, or clinging to a warm, wholesome feeling. What is great about these films is that they depict a truly relatable bond between a dog and its owner. There might even be some that we have to skip emotional scenes because it’s all a bit too much to watch all over again – Marley and Me, we’re looking at you.

Cats at Their Most Standard, Humans at Their Least
If you could not locate a particular white, bespeckled, grey haired, woman of a certain age for most of the day last Saturday near Lawrenceberg Indiana and the surrounding tri-state area I think I know where she must have been. I can report with near certainty that she was among the roughly 150 or so of them who showed up at the Region 6 Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) cat show with me, 100 or so other spectators, about 86 purebred cats of all breeds, and around 10–15 plain old house cats.

The Drunken Silver Poodle
The Drunken Poodle When I was a kid, I always wanted to have a dog. My family was not understanding. In those long ago days, dogs were dispensable. We had several dogs over the years but none lasted very long. The family didn’t figure out that you had to train a dog not to do their business in the house, and other social skills to make them compatible members of the family. A cocker spaniel disappeared suddenly, then two dachshunds, George and Gracie, were gone one morning when I went looking for them. Now, I shudder to think how my mother disposed of them, probably at one of those old fashioned kill shelters.

Some Thoughts on Finding a Place in the World
If you've read my other posts, it will come as no shock to you that I breed dogs and compete with them in conformation shows and various sports trials. I breed very rarely and when I do, a lot of thought goes into the litter that will be produced. I have been "in" Toy Fox Terriers for a while now, but have just recently added Teddy Roosevelt Terriers to my home. It was a decision made over a few years, until I finally found the right dogs for my home and my living situation. Pip, the sire, is a high-quality male from a breeder who produces many UKC champions. Diva, the dam, is a high-quality female from a breeder who has been in the breed for decades and has shown several dogs to the AKC Certificate of Merit title available to breeds newly-accepted to the registry. They and all their puppies are dual registered, so that owners can participate in either or both registries.
