Hectic Mornings 2.0

Running amuck

By Heather Rose PfeifferPublished 4 years ago 4 min read

Well for those who are all caught up with my last story will completely understand this one. So for those of you who do not know I have a 100 pound black lab mix. If you can picture a Rottweiler on steroids that's my Maze! Now keep in mind he is the sweetest dog ever but like any dog he has his flaws. He is a pain on walks because he has to smell everything and hike his leg on what ever he can find. He is the master of pulling me around. Its more him taking me for a walk and not the other way around. I keep meaning to put him in some training classes. But time and finances keep getting in the way. Plus add his stubbornness to the mix. I am not sure this old dog has it in him to learn new tricks.

He does have some manners when he is not licking you to death. He knows his sit and lay down and stuff like that. So keeping all this in mind let me set this scene for you. It is pouring down snowing, and the wind is blowing every which way from Sunday. My front door blows wide open because my ten year old that has not master closing doors. Maze decides at this time to bolt out the door. Of course me being lazy still in pajamas rush to throw on my shoes and grab the leash.

As I am pulling on my coat I see a flash of black ducking into the bushes about a block away. Now we live near a busy road so my heart is pounding already because knowing Maze he will not look both ways when crossing the street. I start to yell out his name hoping that he would come when he is called this time. No such luck he peeks back out of the bushes with his dopey grin on his face as if to say sorry but nope I am going to use this time wisely. He chooses in that moment to turn the opposite way and takes off full speed. If you do not know me I am not a runner like most women its is just not something one does unprepared with out the top cover on.

So I take off after him thinking dang it! Of course my mind is telling me that he is going to think this is a game and just keep running. Sure and right as rain he just keeps going. At this point I am honest to god thinking about renaming him Speedy Gonzales after the mouse. He is zipping this way and that way. I try to keep my distance so hopefully he starts to wear himself out. At this point it has been a good 45 minutes and I am already frozen as a popsicle. As he stops to hike his leg on yet another set of bushes I dive after him in hopes to finally ending this escapade. Just my luck it is a no go.

Now he chooses to go the opposite direction so as I am dazed and in pain due to slamming my knee into the frozen ground I hop up and continue to rush after him to at least keep him in sight. Due to his speed unable to do so. 10 more minutes go by and no sighting of him my heart is pounding, imagining the worst while wondering if I should head back to the house in hopes that he has decided to wander back to his castle like he has done in the past. Now at his point I have been honked at and starred at like I am some crazy person screaming at a imaginary person. My throat is raw due to calling him in my panicking state with tears running down my face.

He makes the best decision to run up to me and looks at me with the oh no now I have done it and moms going to loose her mind. I snatch him by the collar as fast as if its the last piece of cake and hook his leash. Now I have him pulling this way and that but now I know he is safe. We start our way back home. My hair is all over the place and I can not feel my toes also I think my nose has fallen off about a mile ago add me limping due to my banged up knee. We make for a great picture.

When I open the front door my son takes one look at me and states the obvious of Maze got out? At this time I take a deep breath and just give him the mom look of death. My son gets the hint and slowly moves out of the way and apologizes for not closing the door. So now every one in the house has now gotten in the habit of double checking the door to make sure it latches. I have made it a rule because no one wants a repeat of the day due to moms bad mood. I keep promising myself more now that both of my dogs are going to go to puppy school soon.
