Finding Peace in the Company of Animals:
My Journey Through Grief

For several years, I have been breeding rabbits, fully aware of the positive impact animals can have on mental health. However, it wasn't until the day after my husband's passing that I truly understood their profound healing power.
I vividly remember that day. The sky was overcast, and the rain poured down relentlessly. I found myself standing in front of the rabbit hutches, unsure if I could continue with my daily routine. As I stood there, drenched and overwhelmed with grief, a feeling of complete peace and calmness washed over me. In that moment, I realized that this was where I needed to be. Among my rabbits, I felt a sense of home and tranquility that I hadn't experienced since my husband's passing. And I cried.
The presence of my rabbits provided me with a sense of purpose and routine, which was crucial during such a difficult time. Their gentle nature and the simple act of caring for them helped me navigate through my grief. It was in their company that I found solace and a renewed sense of hope.
This experience opened my eyes to the incredible restorative power of animals, not just rabbits, but also canine companions. Dogs, with their unwavering loyalty and unconditional love, have a unique ability to heal our hearts and bring joy back into our lives. They offer emotional support and empathy, sensing our emotions and providing comfort when we need it most. I have always had a dog in my life, and coming home from hospital visits to my husband to a wagging tail and the unconditional love of my dog was something I treasured. But tragically, the day after my husband's funeral an incident happened which meant I had to make the difficult decision to have my beloved dog put to sleep. This was heartbreaking. Not only had I lost my husband, I now had to face having a home without my dog. The house felt empty, not at all like the home it once was.
I knew that having a dog by my side would give me a reason to get up and move, which is essential when dealing with grief. The responsibility of caring for a dog encourages physical activity and helps establish a routine, both of which are beneficial for mental health. Instinctively I knew this, I also knew that regular walks with a dog would not only improve physical well-being but also provide an opportunity to clear my mind and connect with nature. It would be my 'thinking' time. So when a friend phoned, (initially to see how I was and to say how well she felt the funeral had gone), and told me her dog had delivered her puppies just two weeks prior to this, then went on to offer me one. I had no hesitation in saying yes. It also so happened that Bella, the English bull dog, as she is affectionately called, was born just the day before what would have been my husband's 61st birthday. She also happens to be what was his favourite breed of dog. Divine intervention or my husband sending me a message?
Dogs have a remarkable way of bringing joy and laughter into our lives. Bella certainly did that! Her playful antics and boundless energy lifted my spirits and reminded me of the simple pleasures in life. In times of grief, these moments of happiness can be a powerful antidote to sadness, helping find light in the darkest of times.
In conclusion, the journey through grief is never easy, but the companionship of animals can make it more bearable. Whether it's the gentle presence of rabbits or the loyal companionship of a dog, animals have an incredible ability to heal our hearts and bring us peace. If you're struggling with grief, consider opening your heart to a furry friend. The bond you form with them can be a source of strength, comfort, and hope as you move forward.
