What Will You Do When Facing Overwhelming Odds?

The Courage To Take The Mountain

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published about 9 hours ago 3 min read

Many people talk about wanting to have success in their lives...

Their goals...

Their dreams...

And the mountain that is in front of them is huge...

Giant even...

And is filled with obstacles...

Terrors...

Challenges...

And all of it will look overwhelming.

What will you do when you are faced with the overwhelming odds of the mountain before you?

Most people do not even try.

They will look at the mountain and give up before even attempting to climb.

Others will look at the mountain...

And say "one day"...

When the "conditions are right"...

After they have "thought about it more"...

But the truth is that they were never seriously thinking about attempting to climb the mountain.

They may consciously try to "convince" themselves that they intend to...

But subconsciously, they are doing everything to avoid it.

Then there are a few who will begin the journey...

But will turn around as soon as they face their first obstacle...

Or their first challenge...

Or their first encounter with something that drives terror into them.

No amount of enthusiasm alone takes you up the mountain...

And so, they turn around...

Discouraged.

What will you do when faced with overwhelming odds?

It makes me think of a story from the Bible...

Moses has freed his people from enslavement, and they have been wandering in the desert...

God promises Moses the Holy Land of Israel...

But before moving into the land, he sends 12 spies to investigate the land.

10 come and report back with fear in their hearts...

The land had giants and terrors that they could not fathom overcoming...

Despite being promised the land by God.

The other 2 spies...

Saw the land for what it was...

Beautiful...

Full of plenty...

A blessing that God had already promised.

These two spies encouraged the nation to go forward...

But the people of Israel did not go into the promised land out of fear.

Instead...

They wandered in the desert for 40 years.

But this is where it becomes more interesting to me...

One of the two spies who did not have fear in their hearts...

Caleb...

Continued to live through those years...

And when the Israelites finally did decide to move into the Promised Land...

Caleb was 85 years old.

Now, most people in today's world would think about slowing down in their 80's.

Maybe consider retirement.

Call it good enough.

Whatever mountain they were pursuing...

Would remain in the distance...

Never to be overcome.

But Caleb had a different response...

"... and now I am eighty-five years old, but I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me forth, with no less vigor whether it be for war or for any other tasks. Now give me this mountain region which the Lord promised me that day, as you yourself heard. True, the Anakim are there, with large fortified cities, but if the Lord is with me I shall be able to dispossess them, as the Lord promised." - Joshua 14:10-12 NABRE.

Not only did Caleb "ask" for his mountain...

He asked for an entire "region" of mountains...

Filled with fortified cities...

Ruled by the Anakim, who were a race of giants and believed to be the forbearers of Goliath from the events of David and Goliath...

At the age of 85.

Not only does Caleb ask for this...

He takes the mountain region.

He has the courage to take his mountain.

He has Faith in God...

And importantly...

He has faith in himself to accomplish this...

And overcome these overwhelming odds.

Most people do not have this type of faith in themselves...

And lack the courage to face their mountain.

Only 2% of people end up on their deathbed without regret...

Because they faced the overwhelming odds in their lives.

What will you do when facing the overwhelming odds in life?

Will you live your life in fear?

Or will you have faith in yourself?

Will you have the courage to take the mountain?
