Turn your Aesthetic Daydream into a Reality

Who said that we couldn’t just do it now? In this post, I discuss how viewing your daily, normal life aesthetically can change your mindset on your life.

In trying times like these where sometimes it feels like we can’t see the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, its easy to fall into a drought. We can all agree that this isn’t the most ideal situation: Working from home, studying from home, waking up and remaining in the same spot for what seems like forever. I get you, it’s not easy.

Often, when I close my eyes, I’m in my Pinterest-inspired, aesthetic daydream. I live by the most picturesque setting, in the most beautiful cottage, with a coffee in my hand and loved ones around me. I am in my dream job. I am financially stable. I am content and everything is perfect. However, when I open my eyes, I am stuck, full of anxiety & uncertainty of just about everything ahead. It’s good to dream about your ideal life. However, it has taken me up until recently that the mindset when I opened my eyes was not how I wanted it to be.

So how do we improve on this? In situations like these, it is only up to us to - instead of wishing to hit a fast forward button on life - decide what colour spectacle we view our lives and what mindset we have.

I'd like to share with you some videos that I've watched recently that inspired me to write this post. I felt that it really hit it on the nail regarding how I’ve been feeling recently. These videos discuss the topic of how it is possible to view our daily lives through an aesthetic perspective, therefore changing our outlooks on our lives, and it's something I definitely recommend.

Now, when we look at the word “aesthetic”, we automatically think of Tumblr candids or vintage movies when (and I’ve never really realised this fully), it really means being concerned with beauty or having the appreciation of beauty. From there, I feel that my mindset has changed and it has really made me appreciate the little things I do in my life that I once perceived as “too boring". I thought I’d share with you today the little things that I’ve been doing to help me realise that your ideal aesthetic life is right in front of your eyes.

Romanticise your actions

Our lives are normal. We wake up, we do our tasks for the day, sometimes we don’t, we eat occasionally then we sleep and resume the next day. I used to think that in my life, that was all my life consisted of and will always consist of. However, during my daily scroll on Pinterest, I passed the most life-changing quote:

“You’ve gotta start romanticising your life. You gotta start believing that your morning commute is cute and fun, that every cup of coffee is the best you’ve ever had, that even the smallest and most mundane things are exciting and new. You have to, because that’s when you truly start living. That’s when you start looking forward to everyday”

I think that ever since I read that quote, that’s exactly what I did. I feel that everyone should have this perspective not only when in isolation, but when we carry on with our everyday lives. Take the little actions throughout your day: your casual walks to the shop, your cups of tea or coffee, the moments you simply sit in silence. Take those moments you perceive as average and boring and instead take a perspective that perceives it as the most beautiful and exciting thing in the world. Because that’s when you start looking forward to every day of your "average" life.

Take up your dream hobbies

We all have our own ideal visions of ourselves. Maybe we’d like to be a bit more adventurous, to travel or take up a quirky hobby. I’ve always wanted to take up the most random hobbies. However, when it came to the current situation, that’s when I came to one realisation: why haven’t I taken up any of those hobbies before? Dreams of doing a peaceful yoga session in the morning are now a daily habit. Dreams of owning a load of plants are slowly (very slowly!) starting to become a reality. I’ve started to sew and bake more and make YouTube videos and most importantly, I plucked up the courage to start a blog. Ignore what others may think or say about it, who cares? Spontaneously taking up your dream hobbies will make you feel like you’re finally starting to become your ideal person.

Set up the soundtrack to your life

I have the weirdest habit of making way too many playlists for the most random situations. But I feel like it’s because it’s so satisfying to have your background music for any situation possible. So I have a task for you today. Create a playlist. Centre it around the situation you’re in right now and how you’re feeling. I think, as a result, you’ll gain a real sense of satisfaction. It’ll also make your life feel like your own mini-movie which I think is always fun!

Take pictures!

I find it funny that how you take a certain picture can really alter how you look back on a certain moment. Different angles and different emotions reveal different stories. My dad recently took a picture of a corner of the garden and - on the camera - it looked so pleasing to the eye. However, when we looked up, it was just a normal garden. This can also go the other way: we could look at a certain moment thinking it's so picturesque when we can never put it into a picture. But no matter the situation, I feel that taking pictures is so important as it allows us to look back on certain events and think of how great that moment was, most especially the simple moments. It also tells you how your life is more picturesque than you think.

These steps are so simple to take and I think that’s the entire point. It's completely normal to miss and look forward to going back to our own lives where we can go out and explore with our loved ones. But instead of dwelling, let’s take a moment to really appreciate and realise that turning your aesthetic daydream into reality is simpler than you realise. It all starts with the normal life you live daily.

Until then, my friends.
