🌿 The Widow’s Test: When Allah Turns Loss Into Mercy.
A Woman in Distress

In the city of the great saint Hazrat Dawood Tai (RA), there lived a poor widow who was overwhelmed by the trials of life. With children to feed and only three dirhams to her name, the weight of hardship pressed down on her shoulders.
Determined to survive, she took those three dirhams to the market and bought some wool. She spun and sold it, earning five dirhams. Two dirhams went toward food for her children, and with the remaining three, she bought more wool. In this way, she managed to sustain her family for a few days.
One day, after purchasing food and wool, she returned home. She set aside the wool and began feeding her hungry children. Suddenly, from nowhere, a bird swooped in and carried off all the wool. For that poor woman, it felt as though her entire world had been snatched away. Fear of the future and the pain of loss overwhelmed her.
A Question of Faith
Broken and distraught, she went straight to the house of Hazrat Dawood Tai (RA) the very next day. She told him her story and, with tears in her eyes, asked:
“Is our Lord Merciful, or is He unjust?”
The saint, shocked by her anguish, began to console her. At that very moment, a knock came at the door.
Strangers at the Door
When Hazrat Dawood Tai (RA) opened it, he found ten strangers standing outside. Upon being asked their purpose, they said:
“We were traveling by sea when suddenly our ship sprang a leak. Water rushed in so fast that we were certain death was near. In that moment of desperation, each one of us vowed that if Allah saved us, we would give a thousand dirhams in charity.”
“Just as we were praying, a bird came flying and dropped a ball of wool into our boat. We immediately used it to plug the hole. The ship was saved, we bailed out the water, and soon reached the nearest shore safely. Being strangers here, we asked people to direct us to someone trustworthy. They guided us to you. Here are ten thousand dirhams—please ensure they are given to those in need.”
Allah’s Hidden Wisdom
Stunned by Allah’s mysterious arrangement, Hazrat Dawood Tai (RA) took the bag of coins inside and handed it to the grieving widow.
Looking at her with compassion, he said:
“Now, I wish to ask you a question—Is your Lord Merciful, or is He unjust?”
The widow was struck silent. Tears flowed down her cheeks. Every part of her being seemed immersed in gratitude. She realized the wool she thought was stolen had in fact become the means of her deliverance, replaced with wealth she could never have imagined.
Lessons for the Heart
This powerful story reminds us of an eternal truth:
• What we see as loss may in reality be a greater blessing.
• Allah’s plans are far beyond our understanding.
• Patience and trust in Him lead to unexpected relief.
As the Qur’an teaches:
“And whoever fears Allah—He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect.” (Surah At-Talaq: 2–3)
The widow’s tears turned from grief to gratitude because Allah had written for her a destiny filled with mercy, not cruelty. The bird that took away her meager wool was in fact carrying with it the seeds of her prosperity.
Conclusion
In our lives, too, there are moments when everything seems lost. At such times, faith wavers and questions rise in the heart. Yet, the story of the widow and Hazrat Dawood Tai (RA) teaches us that Allah never abandons His servants. Behind every trial lies wisdom, and beyond every hardship awaits relief.
So, when faced with despair, let us remember: Allah’s mercy is infinite, His wisdom flawless, and His timing perfect.
