The Things That Make Us Happy

Story of My Life

The thing that people don’t understand is we all live to work right? We all chase money... But everything in your life is borrowed. Your car, your house, the clothes you wear. Not a single thing goes with you when you’re gone... NOTHING... The only thing you own is your soul and moments in time. So why would you waste any more of your life not chasing your dreams and things you feel passionate about, so you feel whole. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. That’s the only thing that should matter is chasing the things that give you that whole feeling in your soul. Because when you’re gone that’s the only thing you can take with you.

I wish in high school they would ask us questions like these: What makes you come alive? What gets you excited in the morning? What scares you and why? And then chase that! Instead of demanding answers for questions like: What career do you want? What would you want your major to be? What is an average salary for that profession? Society doesn’t know what is best for you. Trusting others to decide your life was our first mistake. As a teenager all I wanted was to be successful in everything I did, but as the time went by, I realized that it was impossible. Don’t get me wrong I believe anything is possible if you put enough time and effort into it. It is just unnecessary to be perfect at everything. The best advice or more of a statement, I’ve ever heard was: “People usually overestimate what they can do in a year. And underestimate what they can do in decade.” This helped me so much to understand the meaning of ‘one step at a time’ will get you to your destination. Although growing up nowadays is challenging, we all try to escape to the things we like to do the most, hobbies.

As a kid, I was so energetic that my parents signed me up for all the possible clubs, classes and courses you can think of. I was in choir, ballet (for 11 years), sculpture course, computer classes, art school, acting etc. Now just thinking about everything makes me tired. Despite all the things I participated in, the only thing to get me settled down seemed to be art, different types of art. I was able to sit for hour and hours working on some creative pieces. It was and is my only escape from all my troubles. It’s crazy to think that most of my teachers tried to push that passion to create in me down, instead of helping me and better it. But I don’t blame them, that’s the way they were taught. No wonder Einstein once said this about the school system: “If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life thinking that it is stupid...” I remember the way I felt when I picked up a pencil to sketch something for the first time, the first time I made a dress out of some janky material and the first time I planted some roses. Learning the world and myself was when I feel the happiest.

I love and respect scissors. Let me explain why. My sister and I used to play dolls a lot, when we were little. But instead of just making up some random scenarios, we would make them bunch of clothes and do runaway shows. That was when I ‘fell in love’ with scissors, their ability to trim things, materials just enough to make them perfect, shape them into masterpiece. Scissors can also destroy things, I never thought that one thing can hold so much power. I’ve always loved crafting and making clothes, so I thought I was going to be a fashion clothes designer. Things change, and the more I got into landscaping and architecture, the more I realized how crazy beautiful the world around us is. And I want to be part of creating it! So, I chose my major in college to be landscape architecture and even though it’s difficult sometimes, I love every second of school.

Let me tell you a little bit about my profession. I’m sure choosing art as my major was the best decision I've ever made. Especially that my mom and friends were very supportive, I’m so lucky to have such people in my life. I can tell you all day long how amazing working with plants or creating beautiful designs is. But until you feel it yourself, it’s pointless. You see, we all have our own personal experiences with creativity. I don’t believe people when they say that they aren’t creative. I think, their creativity just finds a different way out. My journey with art has been nothing but a blessing. Doing things I like, brings me great joy. And you can’t forget the scissors, they’re my biggest help with gardening. It’s almost like magic! So that was my pretty short story about craft that I love doing in life.

I strongly agree that creativity ‘walks in pair’ with happiness, because of the way I feel whole, when I create. Humans’ ability to be passionate, to have that drive about things they enjoy doing is incredible. We all are so different, but so similar at the same time. I love seeing every time somebody’s eyes light up when talk or do the things they love doing. I think, it’s the fact that people are very smart creatures, so in order for us to become and stay happy, we need to find ourselves and our purpose. You and I are just here on Earth to ‘love, live and create’. And that’s what my truth is!
