The Price of a Dream

An Economic Reflection

By DEDEN JOHAR SETIAWANPublished 2 years ago 4 min read

In a small town on the outskirts, there lived a man named Arman. Arman was a carpenter with a modest income. Despite his limited means, he had a big dream: to provide the best education for his children. He believed that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty that had plagued his family for generations.

Every day, Arman worked hard from dawn until dusk. He took on every job that came his way, from fixing broken chairs to building small houses. Every rupiah he earned was set aside for his children's education fund. Yet, there were always unexpected expenses that ate into his savings. Sometimes, he had to borrow money from neighbors or relatives to cover daily necessities.

One day, Arman met a successful businessman named Mr. Surya. Mr. Surya admired Arman's diligence and decided to offer him a major job: building a wooden shop in the town. Arman saw this as the golden opportunity he had long awaited. With high spirits, he began working earnestly.

However, midway through the project, a massive storm hit, destroying much of the work Arman had painstakingly done. All the materials he had bought with great effort were scattered and ruined. Arman felt devastated, but he did not give up. With the remaining energy and savings he had, he started gathering the necessary materials again. Mr. Surya, aware of Arman's struggles, provided additional support and moral encouragement.

Day after day, Arman and his small team worked tirelessly. They woke up early and worked late into the night, ensuring every piece of wood was cut and placed with precision. When the project was finally completed, the wooden shop became one of the best in town. Mr. Surya was very satisfied with Arman's work and paid him more than promised.

With the money earned from this major project, Arman not only had enough for his children's education but also to improve his family's overall economic condition. Arman bought new tools for his carpentry workshop, repaired their leaky house, and even managed to save for the future. His children could now attend the best schools in town, a dream he had long fought for.

But the story does not end there. Arman did not forget his roots and remained humble. He started offering free training to young people in his village who were interested in learning carpentry. He believed that by sharing knowledge and skills, he could help the next generation achieve a better life.

One of his students, a young man named Joko, was very talented and enthusiastic. Arman saw himself in Joko and gave him special attention. Under Arman's guidance, Joko honed his skills and began securing bigger jobs. Joko not only managed to help his family rise out of poverty but also inspired many other youths in his village to follow in his footsteps.

Joko often spent time in Arman's workshop, learning how to work with wood using better and more efficient techniques. Arman taught not only technical skills but also important values such as perseverance, hard work, and integrity. Arman always told Joko, "True success is not just about what you achieve for yourself, but also about what you do for others."

Through Arman's training and support, Joko secured his first contract to build a gazebo in the town park. The project was a great success and significantly boosted Joko's reputation. With the income from this project, Joko began saving to start his own woodworking business. Arman felt proud to see his student succeed and felt that his efforts to share knowledge had paid off.

However, not all journeys were smooth. There were times when Joko faced difficulties and obstacles that nearly made him give up. In such moments, Arman was always there to provide moral support and wise advice. "Every obstacle is a test," Arman said. "If you can overcome it, you will become stronger and wiser."

With Arman's support and guidance, Joko kept moving forward and overcame every challenge that came his way. He successfully built his business and helped his family rise out of poverty. Joko's success inspired many other young people in his village, who began to see that with hard work and perseverance, they too could achieve their dreams.

Arman learned that although life is full of challenges and obstacles, perseverance and hard work are never in vain. He also realized that true success is not just about achieving one's own dreams but also about helping others achieve theirs. He felt fulfilled seeing the changes happening around him and proud to be part of those changes.

Arman's story is a reflection of the struggles many people face in this world. Those who work hard every day to provide a better life for their families. This story reminds us that behind every dream, there is a price to be paid with sweat and tears. But in the end, every drop of sweat and tear will be rewarded sweetly, as long as we never give up.

Through this story, we are invited to reflect on the meaning of perseverance, hard work, and sharing. Arman and Joko are living examples that with an unyielding spirit and a willingness to help one another, we can change our fate and the lives of those around us. And in the end, true success is when we can share happiness and achievements with others.
