The Phoenix Jump

A story of courage, love, and flying

By Lawrence Mireku AduPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

I have found three words from the word search puzzle: Scallop, Phoenix, and Parachute. Here is a story I wrote using these words:

INTRODUCTION

Some people are born with wings, others have to earn them. This is the story of a woman who overcame her fear of heights and discovered the joy of flying. Along the way, she also found love and a new meaning in her life. This is the story of the Phoenix jump.

Chapter 1: The Dream

She had always dreamed of flying. Ever since she was a little girl, she would gaze at the sky and imagine what it would be like to soar among the clouds. She loved birds, planes, kites, anything that could fly. She even had a tattoo of a phoenix on her arm, a symbol of her passion and resilience.

But she never had the courage to try it for real. She was afraid of heights, of falling, of failing. She was content to watch from the ground, to live vicariously through others.

She worked as a librarian at the local college, a quiet and boring job that suited her personality. She had few friends and no romantic interests. She lived alone in a small apartment with her cat, Fluffy. She spent her free time reading books and watching movies about flying.

She was happy enough, but she always felt like something was missing. She always felt like she was meant for something more.

Chapter 2: The Meeting

Until one day, she met him. He was a skydiver, an instructor at the local airfield. He had a smile that could light up the sky and a voice that could calm the storm. He offered to take her on a tandem jump, to show her the thrill of flying.

She hesitated at first, but he convinced her to give it a try. He said it would change her life, that she would never regret it. He said he would be with her every step of the way, that he would keep her safe.

She agreed, and they booked a flight for the next day. She was nervous, but also excited. She felt like she was finally going to fulfill her dream.

She gave him her name and phone number, and he gave her his. His name was Jake. He said he would call her later to confirm the details.

She went home with a smile on her face and a flutter in her heart. She couldn’t wait to see him again.

Chapter 3: The Jump

They arrived at the airfield early in the morning. He gave her a brief training session, explaining how the parachute worked and what to do in case of an emergency. He strapped her to his chest, making sure everything was secure. He gave her a helmet and goggles, and then they boarded the plane.

As they ascended, he talked to her softly, telling her stories and jokes to ease her nerves. He pointed out landmarks and scenery from the window, making her appreciate the beauty of the earth. He told her how much he loved flying, how it made him feel free and alive.

They reached the altitude of 10,000 feet. He checked the altimeter and nodded. It was time to jump.

He moved towards the door, pulling her along with him. She felt a surge of fear and adrenaline as she looked down at the ground below. It seemed so far away, so unreal.

He asked her if she was ready. She nodded, too scared to speak.

He smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I’ve got you.”

He leaned forward and pushed them out of the plane.

She screamed as they plunged into the air, feeling like she was falling to her death. He wrapped his arms around her tightly, whispering words of encouragement in her ear.

He counted down from five and pulled the cord.

The parachute opened with a jolt, slowing their descent. She felt a wave of relief wash over her as she realized they were safe.

He adjusted their position and steered them towards the landing zone. He pointed out things of interest along the way, such as birds, rainbows and other skydivers.

She looked around and felt a sense of awe and wonder. She was flying. She was actually flying.

She felt a surge of joy and gratitude fill her heart. She thanked him for giving her this opportunity, for making her dream come true.

He smiled and said, “You’re welcome.”

He kissed her gently on the cheek and said, “You’re amazing.”

She blushed and said, “You’re not so bad yourself.”

They laughed and hugged each other as they floated down to earth.

They landed softly on the grass and unhooked themselves from the harness. He helped her stand up and took off her helmet and goggles.

He looked into her eyes and said, “How do you feel?”

She smiled and said, “I feel like a phoenix.”
