His method teaches you how to break down complex abilities, increase productive practise, and overcome common learning obstacles. According to research, learning a new skill takes 10,000 hours. When will you ever find so much time and energy in this relentless world? To make matters worse, the most frustrating times to practise something new are often the first few hours. That's why it's challenging.
Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare?
There are two parts to the book: theoretical and practical. The "theory" section begins with a description of a typical circumstance that I can completely relate to. We aspire to master a variety of skills throughout our lives, ranging from programming to playing the guitar to learning a new language. However, irritation at the beginning of a learning curve, when we are at the lowest point, is one of the factors that generally prevents us from taking the first step. We avoid starting because we are terrified of failing, of being lost, uneducated, and silly. We often ask herself or our first response "I'll do it when I find time for that."
The approaches in this book were personally field-tested by Kaufman. He describe how he achieve a personal yoga practice, makes his own web-based computer program, learns to type properly on a nonstandard keyboard, investigates history's oldest and most intricate board game, picks up the ukulele, and windsurfs.
“The best thing that can happen to a human being is to find a problem, to fall in love with that problem, and to live trying to solve that problem, unless another problem even more lovable appears.”
Some of the simple tactics he teaches are as follows you can do it too:
- Define your goal degree of competence, what you're trying to accomplish, and what you'll be ready to do after you're finished. The more precise you can be, the better.
- Choose a skill that you are eager to learn. Choose something you truly require or enjoy.
- Prepare yourself. Create your roadmap by determining what you need to know in order to master the fundamentals of the skill.
- Dividing the expertise into smaller subskills is a good idea. You'll deal with each of them one at a time, step by step.
- Remove any impediments. Remove any distractions from your practice sessions.
Practice for a total of at least 20 hours. Do things in a consistent and systematic manner, with complete focus and dedication. A learning session should not exceed 90 minutes in length.
Make quick feedback loops: It's much easier to improve once you have accurate, real-time information on how well you're performing throughout practice.
