As we enter spring, our first thoughts are to perform the annual task of “spring cleaning”. To some of us that means cleaning out closets, the basement, or the garage. To some of us it means clearing out the planting beds and replacing them with a fresh and vigorous landscape. However, to some of us it means to perform a complete overhaul on our lives and how we spend our time.
What is my definition of spring cleaning? Well, I have to say all the above. The acts of physical cleaning and organizing is something that makes me feel accomplished and ready to start anew. After many of years of convincing myself, this is the true meaning of spring cleaning, I have come to realize that this is only a temporary feeling of accomplishment. What normally ends of happening, is that within weeks everything begins to clutter up again. Our feelings are cluttered up again.
This spring, I will define a new meaning of spring cleaning for myself. I will clean my body, I will clean my spirit, and I most importantly will clean my mind. I will shed the negative thoughts and agitators that have been weighing me down mentally and physically. When we learn to release our minds, we can truly learn how to relax.
Relaxation is defined as the state of being free from tension and anxiety. What areas of our lives to we need to clean up that will allow us to experience and rejoice in relaxation? Is it a career change? Is it a long-deserved vacation away from our daily tedious lives? Is it a change with relationships within our current social circles?
Well, again, I have to say all the above. A recent medical diagnosis has made me put on the brakes to the life as I have known it. I must re-evaluate what and who I give my time to. My priorities must be re-organized immediately to achieve my ultimate spring cleaning this year. I must process where my anxieties come from and take the steps to spring into a healthier mind frame. I would like to share few ideas that I will put into practice today so I can enjoy the days to come.
One, release the negative environmental elements that are creating strain on your mental and physical well-being. We can start with small changes such as the morning routine, take a different way into work for new scenery, or maybe even eat lunch outside by yourself for thirty to sixty minutes of quiet time.
Two, take a hiatus from the person or thing that is draining you from being in a place of contentment. Begin with saying no to going out with someone that is unpleasant to hold a conversation with or refrain from going to a place that hinders you from making good healthy decisions in general.
Finally, rely on one person or thing that always brings you joy and seek that often. Contact the person who lends you a shoulder and solid advice. Visit a location that brings your clarity such as the beach or local park. Seek a professional counselor or spiritual advisor to assist with finding an inner peace.
As I express of all the ways we can slowly exert changes into certain areas of our life, I completely understand that is sometimes easier said than done. However, we must make an admirable effort for the health of our bodies and minds. We individually must make an evaluation of the stressors and the pleasures, an opportunities and obstacles list, if you will, and in return create an aspiration list of changes you wish to apply.
