Seen it all
About an owl whos seen all of human evolution
I've seen it all. I've seen every society on Earth. I am a 15,000 year old barn owl. I don't have a name, and I never will. I've never seen a need for them anyway. Ever since my birth, I've seen the evolution of humanity. I've seen the taming of the horse to the invention of the smartphone. I've seen countless wars, the making of the silk road, the egyptian monarchy, and everything else. It's both a blessing and a curse that my body has managed to see this day. It's all going downhill from where I see it, and I've seen it all anyway.
I remember from my life are people worshipping a group of stones, all in similar size and shape. It's on what the humans now call Europe. Humans now call this structure Stonehenge. The original people who made this structure said that dancing around it will bring happiness and wisdom. People now just think that it's interesting to look at and imagine its original use. Sad that they'll never truly know the way of old.
I remember the old trade routes invented by the middle easterns. They tended to stock up on salt, since it was the only way to preserve food back then. All members of the Egyptian monarch hand a large abundance of salt, considering that they all had the money to afford it. Many of the people would ask for some of the wealth that they owned, but they would refuse. I've even observed some attempts to poison the pharaohs of the monarch. Many of them were lobbyists who would try and get close to the king through money.
The world used to be full of tightly knit communities who all know each other and cherished time with each other in person. I remember such things as fables told to the children of small towns to teach them lessons. I remember when there was an abundance of orphanages and caring nannies who would love to see the children's laughter. I remember when the dark ages, when people would drink nothing but alcohol. I also remember when torture was still a viable option of getting information. They would use things such as saws, rats, and fire to get whatever they can out of a person.
It was around the mid 18th century when people seemed to be really determined to grow their wealth and find new ways to make money. It was also around then when people started to realise that they can use electricity. One of the first instances I can remember of people trying to grow to such a greedy extent was when I saw the first war. Since I am immortal, I can also perceive time at will to an extent. For Example, i can see a whole month in a second if i want to. The first war I saw was the one between the Israelites and the assyrians. It ended with the Israelites being exiled from their country of Canaan. I saw them evolve as a religion. They made many synagogues. It was beautiful for me at the time. I had seen people get everything that they loved be ripped apart, but they were determined enough to make it through the ordeal, and managed to rebuild as a people.
It was around the 17th century when I started to notice a trend. People will instinctually always choose themselves over others and try to achieve their goals in the most violent ways possible, even when there's no benefit to doing so. When i saw that north america was trying to become a country, I expected it to be peaceful, but they decided to start a war, and on top of that, when they won the war, they were knee deep in debt. Throughout the country's history, the people would always try to get their way by force. For example, during prohibition, I would see many of the humans try and sneak alcohol through old warehouses and sneak past the law enforcement. As an owl, I obviously can't see the appeal of consuming large amounts of substances with no benefit. I hope that those people managed to lead good lives, even though all they would do in the night is party.
As an immortal barn owl, I’ve faced my fair share of ordeals as well. Once, around 1917, I was forced to become a passenger pigeon For Austria to send secret messages beyond my will. It was fun for the first few months, but it was very tiring after about a year. Even though I wanted to leave, I couldn't. There, if a bird was seen trying to leave without the permission of authority, they would shoot down the bird, because it might wander to another country and give off evidence to the whereabouts of secret bases. I wanted to leave, but I didn't want to let down the country. One day I decided to escape. Though, on the day I knew I would escape, a very important message was being sent through my ability. Even though I was a barn owl, I was regarded as the best passenger for my ability to remember routes, so I was usually trusted with the more important messages. On the day of my escape, I was given information that would have won the war for Austria. It was the blueprints for a new type of bomb that could be used to cause a lot of damage to many bases. It was a hard decision, but I decided to escape that day. Astria lost the war a few months later. I blame myself for their loss and still feel the blame to this day.
In the 1980, I noticed a large increase in progression of the human race. I noticed their evolution in their understanding of technology and science. Though I also noticed a large increase in ignorance. The older people who would run large companies would release toxic gas and smog into the air and cause what could be the extinction of humanity. The human race no longer cares about survival as a race, but more about their net worth. Overall, I'm disappointed in the human race, but also intrigued in what the humans are doing about it. It seems that the newer generations of humans are trying to get the ones with more authority to stop their rampages of destruction and to start trying to fix their wrongs. I hope that the younger humans can stop this trend of greed and start a trend of actual growth as a species.
