Have you ever taken the time to step back and consider your approach to the multiple trials and issues you face on a daily basis? If you could step back from yourself and observe your actions as they relate to a situation or problem you’re facing, you might be amazed at how clearly the best solution comes to you. To use a golf analogy; the best way to improve your swing is to watch it on video. While this exercise could be shocking and often embarrassing to some, the result is a deep look into what might be causing that slice. The flaws and the multiple things that happen with that swing become fairly obvious in the few seconds between the address, the backswing, striking of the ball and the follow through.

Positive thinking works in much the same way. Zig Ziglar was famous for viewing life from a positive viewpoint versus negatively. While there are many ways to approach an issue, if one could step back, take a minute and mentally focus on the most positive way to manage an issue, many times the outcome is received much more favorably. How do we do this? Might I suggest that when faced with a problem or a challenge you consider shifting the focus from what is best for you and explore ways to focus on a solution which places the emphasis on the issue at hand as it relates to everyone as a collective unit.

A simple exercise. Take any issue you are currently dealing with and look at it from all angles and as many different perspectives as possible. There is rarely one solution to the problem your facing. However, there is more than likely a best solution. Ask yourself, “If I choose this route, how does that affect the collective whole?” Is there a solution that not only solves the issue but provides a positive outcome everyone can get behind and support? I realize this is not as easy as it sounds. However, a simple exercise is to write down the many possible solutions to a problem and choose the answer that speaks to their effect on others, not just how it will affect you. If we can outwardly focus on the many solutions available, it becomes obvious which solution is correct but how this decision will impact everyone involved.

The power of positivity is real and can be applied to every aspect of your life. A person with a positive attitude attracts other positive people but socially and professionally. Positive thinking attracts more positive thinking and dispels the notion that the only opinion that counts is our own. The next time you are faced with a decision, ask yourself the following questions.

• From what or whose perspective am I operating, my own or others?

• Will my proposed solution contribute to the overall improvement of the organization, or only my specific role?

• Am I looking at this issue from all points of view and am I regularly soliciting others for their thoughts and potential solutions?

• Am I involving the entire team in the solution or making the decision in a vacuum without consideration for how my decision will affect others throughout the organization?

• Am I testing my theory on others to gain their insight and better understand their point of view or am I focused only on how a decision will affect me?

Approaching a problem from a positive mental state is not always easy. In the world today there are ever increasing pressures to make quick decisions so you can get on to the next task. I challenge you to take a step back the next time you are facing a situation that calls for a quick decision and ask yourself the questions above. I think you will find it is something you can do quickly and in the long run, will not only serve you but the organization you are paid to improve.

Zig Ziglar was one of the greatest motivators in history. His writings have influenced millions to develop a more positive outlook personally and professionally. I’ll leave you with another Zig Ziglar quote from See You at the Top.

“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” This is true today and will remain so for years to come.

Thanks for reading and stay positive.
