Navigating Capricornhood

The Complexities of Being Both a Goat and a Fish

By Ashleigh TaylorPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

I still enjoy a little internal laugh when I think of the night my best friend, who was also newly my boyfriend, read my star signs. But before that, we, of course, had to read about our match. Him a Pisces and me a Capricorn, The book praised the give and take of artistic Pisces living in a fluid dreamy world and stoic, on edge mountain climbing Capricorn. The connection was said to be strong with a fluid balance. We got married only a couple of weeks later; I guess you could say he's my fish.

Something I always found interesting with the Capricorn imagery is the fishtail, the Juxtaposition of personality. As the duality suggests, Capricorn is complicated with the balance of personality; both the witch and the skeptic live inside of me. Rationality is just prioritized, and Pisces enjoys prying out what lies deep in the heart of Capricorn. Because it's different than what most wear on the surface, this is why Capricorn and Pisces are such a good match. Pisces welcomes Capricorn to relax and explore the inner depths of the Capricorn's spiritual and emotional needs—allowing Cap to set aside the climb to be less of a task and more of a journey.

I didn't know until a couple of years ago there was a sun sign, moon sign, and so on. I heard they were important in readings, but I was pretty adamant about identifying with just Capricorn.

As he began to read all my signs under all the planets and so on, I sipped my whisky and became increasingly amused because it went, Capricorn, Capricorn, Capricorn, Capricorn- How was that possible? There were two others in there, but I didn't care. The DNA test was in, and I was approximately 89% that Capricorn. And oh, I had known it!

When I was younger, I didn't quite understanding how Capricorn applied to me. I felt like a constant failure for years. Recently I've been looking back over my life and analyzing what being a Capricorn has meant to me. For one, I always had more ambition than I knew what to do with, more than one lifetime supply.

Thaaaaat can get overwhelming.

Bringing a Capricorn to the point that's basically; if I cant do it all, I won't do anything at all. It took me four tries and three various colleges to start making progress in college. How could that be a trait of a Capricorn? I'll tell you why.

A Capricorn must first learn to accept that she (yes, we're talking about the she-goats here) Is, yes, human. And therefore not perfect. She has plentyyy of growing to do. An unexpectedly lousy grade, mixing up a start date to a class, feeling embarrassed about a presentation can cause a Capricorn to throw up every wall and retreat. A Capricorn can be sensitive to their mistakes and unappreciated work, causing many setbacks. I remember throwing away all of my art in 10th grade because someone said it wasn't good. But! Cap is also adamant, grows, learns, and returns to climb and conquer that mountain.

At the same time, beware Cap of the other side of the coin; unwavering dedication can also do the opposite. Throwing us from the path of success when we get too focused on proving ourselves. A Cap will stick in situations they've outgrown or are toxic to prove how much they can withstand. Like an ex-boyfriend that lost a job and just ceased to be an adult. Then a Capricorn may go into tons of debt to prove their ability to keep it all together. Okay Guilty! (Sagittarius, if you're reading this, better watch yourself on that self-indulgence and procrastination!)

Or It can be perceived to others or maybe even ourselves that we let people walk on us that we refuse to stand up for ourselves. When you realize you're doing it just to prove yourself, you can free yourself, Cap!

I've learned a lot about myself growing into my proper Capricorn form. Whether you believe in horoscope or you don't. It's still a useful tool to analyze yourself deeper with. But for any lost Caps reading this, I leave you with this; I know you are most likely your own worst enemy. Don't let yourself self-destruct; no one is perfect; accept your mistakes, keep climbing, but don't climb just to prove you can. And if you can, get a Pisces in your life!
