This story will move you.

Some of the best types of stories I like to read are stories of resilience, of strength, of people who have had horrible things happen to them but still found a way to rise above it. Stories like this I tend to find very empowering and although sometimes, in fact a lot of times, they are heartbreaking stories, the strength of these people is just so encouraging you can’t help but be moved.

Today, I’ll be sharing with you one of such stories. It’s quite heartbreaking at the beginning but at the end, you’ll be incredibly moved.

Today, I’ll be sharing with you the story of a fast rising Nigerian actress who goes by the name, Doris Samuel Akonanya.

Are you ready to read Doris’ story? Then let’s go!

Doris Samuel Akonanya was born in Anambra State, Nigeria with both of her legs intact, strong, and healthy. She had a regular childhood. She went to nursery school, primary school, had friends, ran around the playground, caused a little bit of mischief here and there, played hide and seek with her friends, participated in interhouse sports, relay races, all of the normal things a growing child of that age indulges in.

But then, at the age of thirteen, when Doris was still in secondary school, her mother asked her elder sister to go with her to the shop and told Doris to take care of her younger ones. Being an adventurous young girl, she decided to still go out and her younger sister decided to follow her out.

While crossing the road, Doris was dancing and out of nowhere, a motorcycle came and hit her. Her sister was crying and screaming for help and eventually they carried Doris to her father’s shop. Her father decided to take her to the hospital but the people around at the time said it wasn’t too serious and that native medicine would take care of it in no time.

So, they found a Hausa man who they said was very good at treating these things. He did one or two things when he first showed up but then didn’t show up again for another three or four days. The leg decayed. According to Doris, “you could see the bones. Water started coming out of the leg. It was looking irritating and everybody in the house was shocked.”

Eventually, the healer came back and was shocked to see how badly the leg had deteriorated. He said he had never handled anything like this before and he left her case. Her family had to go ahead and package her leg in carton because the leg was kind of scattered already, “like butchered meat” according to Doris.

She was eventually rushed to an orthopedic hospital where the doctor there told her that the leg was “spoilt already”. He said to Doris that they had to amputate the leg and as you can imagine, she was angry and couldn’t believe it.

She lost hope. She screamed. She always wanted to be a dancer and singer and couldn’t see any way that could be possible now.

When she got home, the crying didn’t stop. Sometimes she wouldn’t even bathe. When she got back to school, she was rude to people. She thought she was going to die anytime soon. Eventually, all the emotions got worse when her parents decided to divorce.

She fell into depression.

Until…

One day, she saw a video of motivational speaker, Nick Vujicic. This transformed her life.

Seeing Nick so happy and hearing his story, she got motivated and found gratitude for the life that she had and the leg she still had.

She decided to go for her dreams and she enrolled in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, where she studied Theatre Arts. When she first got into the department, people doubted her ability. Then on one faithful day during a performance ceremony, Doris got on the stage and decided to dance with her crutches. This got a reaction from people, but then during the performance Doris decided to DROP THE CRUTCHES and dance on just one leg. The people were in disbelief and cheered her on very loudly. In fact, there were people crying in the audience. Doris knew that she had what it took to make it, regardless of her situation. So, she went full force into the entertainment industry and started auditioning for parts.

In some of the auditions, casting people said they weren’t looking for “disabled people” - a name she hates being called. Eventually, she got her big break and she got to star as the lead character of 2015 movie, Susanna.

Since then it has only been up and up for this very talented actress. In 2017 , she produced her own movie titled Limitless.

Doris' story is proof that as long as there is life, there is hope. I hope that this very moving story of this talented and beautiful young woman touches you in the way that it has touched me. This is Doris today:
