Lord of the Flies

"The Darkness Within Us All"

By Muhammad HayatPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

Lord of the Flies is a powerful and intense novel by William Golding. At first, it seems like a fun adventure about boys stranded on an island. But as the story unfolds, it becomes much deeper and much darker. It shows us what can happen when rules disappear, fear takes over, and the wild side of human nature is set free.

A Plane Crash and a New World

The story begins during a war. A group of British schoolboys are flying out of the country when their plane crashes on a deserted tropical island. There are no adults left, only the boys some of them very young.

At first, this seems like a dream come true. No parents, no teachers, no rules just freedom. The island is beautiful, full of fruits, beaches, and wild places to explore. The boys are excited, laughing and playing like it's a giant vacation.

But they also know they need to stay safe and get rescued. So they start to organize themselves.

Choosing a Leader

The boys hold a vote and choose a boy named Ralph as their leader. Ralph is fair, calm, and focused on getting help. He insists on building shelters, keeping a signal fire going, and working together. Another boy, Piggy, is smart but shy. He wears glasses and gets teased a lot, but he gives helpful advice.

But not everyone wants to follow rules.

The Rise of Jack and the Fall of Order

One of the older boys, Jack, is in charge of the choirboys. He wants to be chief, and he doesn’t like following Ralph’s calm leadership. Jack is wild, loud, and full of pride. He becomes obsessed with hunting pigs and being powerful.

Soon, Jack forms his own group. They paint their faces, act like savages, and live for the thrill of the hunt. They start to ignore the rules, the fire, and the goal of rescue. They enjoy the feeling of control and fear.

The group starts to split Ralph’s group, who wants to be rescued, and Jack’s group, who only wants to hunt and have fun.

  • Fear of the Beast

As time goes on, the boys begin to believe there is a "beast" on the island. It starts with the younger kids having nightmares. But even the older ones start to believe something evil is watching them.

This fear grows stronger every day. But the truth is, there is no beast at least not in the way they think. The real beast is the darkness inside them.

One of the most powerful moments in the book is when a kind boy named Simon realizes this. He has a vision in which a pig's head on a stick left as an offering by Jack’s tribe “speaks” to him. It is called the Lord of the Flies, and it tells Simon:

“I’m part of you… I’m the reason why it’s no go. Why things are the way they are.”

Simon understands that the real monster isn't out in the jungle. It’s in their hearts.

Things Fall Apart

As the boys become more savage, things get worse. Simon is killed in a frenzy during a wild dance. Piggy is later murdered too. Jack's tribe now rules with fear, and Ralph is left alone, running for his life.

The island that once felt like paradise has become a nightmare a world without rules, kindness, or reason.

Rescue... But at What Cost?

Just as Ralph is about to be captured and killed, he stumbles onto the beach where a naval officer has arrived. The boys are finally rescued.

But this moment is not joyful. Ralph begins to cry, and the other boys do too not just because they are safe, but because they now realize what they have become.

What Does the Story Really Mean?

Lord of the Flies is more than a story about kids on an island. It’s a deep and disturbing look at:

Human nature : How we all have a good side and a dark side

Fear : How fear can take over and destroy us

Power and control : What happens when people crave power more than peace

Civilization vs. savagery : How rules keep us human, and what happens when they vanish

Final Thoughts

Lord of the Flies makes us ask big questions: What would we do in that situation? Would we stay kind, or would we change? Are people naturally good, or is there something darker inside us?

It’s a story that stays with you, long after the last page because it doesn’t just talk about a group of boys. It talks about all of us.
