It’s NOT Brave

It’s Just A Hair Cut

By Tia W. MayPublished 6 years ago 2 min read

When I stood up and spoke to my entire school it was brave. When I stood up to my bullies it was brave, when I overcame a life of homelessness it was brave, when I raised my child alone it was brave, when I joined the army it was the brave, when I decided to have 3 children it was brave, but let me be perfectly clear, cutting your hair is not brave, it’s a damn hair cut.

So many people keep telling me how brave I am to rock this hair, and honestly it upsets me. Woman say they want to cut their hair but they aren’t brave enough. Brave enough??? It’s going to grow back, nothing bad is going to happen to you when it comes off, so why do you need to be brave to do it?

If you think you’ll get crazy looks everywhere you go you won’t, because quite honestly most people don’t care two shits about your hair, they are too busy handling their own lives to even notice.

Before I shaved my head I had always seen woman talk about how much freedom they felt, and empowered by the lack of hair, and they were right.

You think you’ll lose your femininity, but that’s just a lie society has lead you to believe, the truth is our hair doesn’t decide our gender, and to be honest what does your gender even matter.

I was scared to do it, only because I was scared of being judged, but let me tell you, I have more confidence than I ever have, it’s like my last give a damn was in that hair I shaved off, and it feels amazing.

I barely ever wear makeup now, I used to spend 2 hours on my hair and face daily, and I just love the countless hours I’m gaining back in my life that I’m not getting all dolled up.

So, if you’ve been dying to cut your hair off, do it! Don’t second guess it, just live, do what you want, because those people you fear judgement from, they don’t matter, they hold very little importance in your life.

If you’re like me and you feel you need to cut your hair due to illness, do it proudly, I promise you, it’s so much better than you think. There’s a huge amount of weight and stress that just falls off your shoulders in the moment it’s gone.

Quit telling people you’re not brave enough, and go do what ever it is, new hair, new clothes, weird hobby, what ever it may be...just do it!
