I want to be bored because boredom is the only thing that makes me creative. It helps me to think outside the box and create new stuff, solve issues, and be also happier.

We live in a society that is never bored

We live in a society that is never bored — and what’s because of our little friend in our pocket — our smartphone. Everything is connected and we have all the information of the world available through our daily partner. Our smartphone opens the dimensions to all the knowledge, helps us stay connected with friends, and see what they are doing. We can read, listen, or watch anything we want — all the time.

I want to ask you when was the last time you were bored?

For myself, I don’t know. As a child, we were so bored that we imagined something, we lived for a couple of minutes or hours in our fantasy world. Role-played with friends or just explored what our parent's house or the world had to offer. But sometimes, we were so bored. We couldn’t find out what to do — it was horrible — but we found something that was interesting or we build something. Boredom helped us to explore the world and go one step further — we were creative af.

Today, if you feel just a little bit of boredom we put our phone out of our pocket and scroll and scroll and scroll. It’s an endless scrolling of information we maybe didn’t even decide on. We just want to be entertained & the tools from all these big companies, they can do this really well. I don’t want to say that social media or your phone is bad but it leads to being not in control of what you consume & that you don’t feel bored.

How can boredom help you? Let’s find out.

I started to delete most of my apps from my smartphone & said that I only am allowed to consume this on my laptop. This leads to situations where I put out my phone & don’t have a clue what I just wanted to do. There is no Instagram available that shows me photos from all the people around the world. No TikTok that will entertain you every 5 seconds with different content. It is just a device that shows you the time & maybe your calendar.

So the conclusion is, I sometimes well so bored. My brain wants to consume, my brain wants to be entertained.

What happens is, I want to do something. I want to clean up the kitchen. I want to go out for a run. I want to call a friend. I want to meet my friends. I want to write an article on Medium. I want to find out what I can sell from my old stuff or clothes.

I guess you got the point, you get creative because you are bored. Boredom is a feeling that shows you that you want to do something. Your body wants to move, Your brain wants to think. You have too much energy & you need to release it in any way.

That’s why you start doing so much cool stuff — or just regular stuff, cleaning the house. Changing your mood from boredom to being excited about doing something.

Our little friend, the smartphone, is only interesting to us because it opens up possibilities to “do” something. However, it’s for some of us a trap and you get tied up in a loop of consumption.

So as a result, I hope you allow yourself to be bored.

Go out for a run without your smartphone, no music. Just running and thinking. Try to work, no phone — Just working. Go to the toilet — no phone just… being on the toilet.

Boredom helps you to think more, helps you find out what you really want.

Your smartphone just wants you to be entertained — forgetting all the important stuff that’s laying around.
