How I Overcame Fear That Was Holding Me Back (And How You Can Too)

How I Overcame Fear That Was Holding Me Back (And How You Can Too)

By Aman SaxenaPublished about a month ago 5 min read

Fear kept me stuck for a long time.

It held me back from opportunities, from growth, and from the life I knew I could create.

But one day, I realized I had the power to break free from it.

Here’s how I overcame the fear that was keeping me from moving forward — and how you can too.

Fear has a way of holding you hostage.

It shows up as self-doubt, procrastination, hesitation, and avoidance.

It tells you to wait, to stay safe, to not take risks.

It keeps you small and prevents you from living up to your potential.

I’ve been there — frozen by fear.

I felt paralyzed by the thought of failure, rejection, and the unknown.

Every time I thought about making a change,

fear would whisper, “What if it doesn’t work? What if you fail?”

But over time, I realized that fear wasn’t just something I could ignore.

Fear was something I had to face head-on.

Here’s how I learned to overcome fear and start moving forward in my life.

⭐ STEP 1: I ACCEPTED THAT FEAR WAS A NORMAL PART OF GROWTH

The first shift in my mindset was understanding that fear is not the enemy.

Fear is a natural response to change,

to stepping into the unknown,

to trying something that challenges you.

I used to think that fear meant I wasn’t capable or strong enough.

But then I realized:

Fear is not an indicator of weakness.

It’s a signal that you are about to grow.

Instead of avoiding fear, I started accepting it as part of the process.

When fear showed up, I didn’t try to push it away —

I acknowledged it and moved forward anyway.

⭐ STEP 2: I REFRAMED MY FEARS INTO QUESTIONS

Fear often manifests as an overwhelming thought:

“What if I fail?”

“What if I’m not good enough?”

“What if they judge me?”

I used to let these thoughts control me.

But then I learned how to reframe them into questions I could answer:

“What if I fail?” → “What’s the worst that could happen?”

“What if I’m not good enough?” → “What makes me think I’m not good enough?”

“What if they judge me?” → “What if they don’t?”

By asking these questions, I realized that my fears were often based on assumptions,

not facts.

And when I started questioning my fears,

I found they weren’t as powerful as I thought.

⭐ STEP 3: I TOOK SMALL ACTIONS THAT SCARED ME

The most powerful way to overcome fear is to take action —

even small actions.

I used to think that taking big leaps was the only way to make progress.

But I learned that small steps are just as powerful.

Whenever fear held me back,

I committed to taking just one small step:

Send the email.

Make the phone call.

Take the first step toward my goal, no matter how imperfect.

With every small action, my fear started to lose its grip.

Taking action created momentum — and momentum created confidence.

The more I acted, the less control fear had over me.

⭐ STEP 4: I LEARNED TO SEPARATE FEELINGS FROM FACTS

Fear often tries to convince you that it’s a fact:

“You’re not good enough.”

“This will never work.”

“You’re going to fail.”

But I learned something important:

Feelings are not facts.

Just because I felt fear didn’t mean that the situation was dangerous or that I would fail.

Fear was simply an emotion that I could experience, but I didn’t have to act on it.

I started separating my feelings of fear from the facts of the situation.

I would ask myself:

“Is this fear based on reality, or is it just my mind playing tricks?”

“What’s the actual risk here?”

“What are the facts I can focus on?”

By doing this, I started to take the power out of my fear and see situations more clearly.

⭐ STEP 5: I EMBRACED THE POSSIBILITY OF FAILURE

One of the biggest reasons I stayed stuck was my fear of failure.

I was terrified that if I tried something new, I would fail — and that failure would define me.

But then I realized:

Failure isn’t final.

Failure is feedback.

When I stopped fearing failure, I realized that it wasn’t something to avoid,

but something to learn from.

Failure wasn’t an end; it was a part of the journey.

So I started embracing the possibility of failure as part of growth.

Instead of fearing it, I started looking for the lessons in it.

⭐ STEP 6: I PRACTICED MINDFULNESS TO CALM MY MIND

Fear often takes over when our minds race with thoughts of what could go wrong.

It’s easy to spiral into worst-case scenarios.

To combat this, I practiced mindfulness to bring myself back to the present moment:

I focused on my breath.

I practiced grounding techniques.

I reminded myself that my fears were often projections of the future —

not the reality of the present.

Mindfulness helped me calm my mind and stop fear from taking control.

Instead of letting fear dictate my actions, I learned to stay present and act with clarity.

⭐ STEP 7: I SURROUNDED MYSELF WITH SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE

Fear thrives in isolation.

When I was struggling with fear, I often tried to face it alone,

thinking I had to be strong on my own.

But the truth is:

Support is essential when you’re facing fear.

I surrounded myself with people who believed in me —

friends, family, mentors —

who encouraged me to take risks, who reassured me, and who reminded me that I was capable.

Their support helped me take bold steps when fear tried to hold me back.

⭐ WHERE I AM NOW

I’m not fearless,

and I still feel fear from time to time.

But I’ve learned how to move through it —

instead of letting it control me.

Now:

I face fear with curiosity instead of dread.

I take small actions even when fear shows up.

I embrace failure as part of the process.

I trust myself to overcome obstacles.

I’m no longer paralyzed by fear.

I move forward with courage and confidence.

Fear no longer keeps me stuck.

And it won’t keep you stuck either.

⭐ CLOSING NOTE

If fear is stopping you from moving forward, please remember:

Fear is natural.

Fear doesn’t mean you’re weak.

Fear is just a signal —

not a fact.

You have the power to move past it.

You have the ability to face it.

You have the strength to act,

even when fear is standing in your way.

Start small.

Stay present.

Embrace failure.

Find support.

And take that first step.

You can overcome fear.

And you will.
