How I found myself through interior design

A short story about myself

By Zohreh AsadiPublished 2 months ago 3 min read

Today, I want to tell you a story about myself that changed my life. I graduated in chemistry from one of the top universities in Tehran. To be honest, when I was in elementary school, I was a curious student, and my favorite subject was chemistry because I thought it had so much to do with discovering new materials. That’s why I decided to continue this path at university.

However, I’ve always had a strange habit. Whenever I visited someone’s home for the first time, a friend, a relative, anyone, my mind instantly started rearranging everything. I’d imagine different colors, new furniture, softer lighting. I didn’t even realize I was doing it, it just felt natural to me. Most of my friends asked me to decorate their homes or sought my opinion when they wanted to buy something new.

After graduating, I looked for a job related to my field, but unfortunately, it was very hard to find one. I was really disappointed until my brother, who’s really into computers and design, suggested that I start creating design plans. For years, it had just been a quiet thought in my head, I never imagined it could actually turn into my job.

At first, it wasn’t easy. Designing something in your imagination is one thing, but turning it into a real plan that works for someone’s home is completely different. I remember how challenging it was in the beginning every small mistake taught me something new. I spent hours watching tutorials, reading about color harmony, lighting, and kitchen layouts. Little by little, I began to understand how space, texture, and emotion come together to make a place feel like home.

What I love most about this job is that every project feels like a new story. Each client has their own taste and lifestyle, and I get to translate that into a design that reflects who they are. It’s full of challenges, surprises, and learning , and that’s exactly what keeps me excited every single day. Sometimes I still feel nervous when I start a new project, but interior design became more than just my career, it became a part of who I am.

Looking back, I realize that sometimes life leads us in unexpected directions. I never planned to become a designer, but this path found me and I’m so grateful it did. It taught me that passion doesn’t always appear where we expect it. Sometimes it hides quietly inside us, waiting for the right moment to shine. Every time I see a finished design and a happy client, I feel that spark again , the same one I felt years ago when I imagined rearranging someone’s home for the first time.

One of the first projects I worked on was a small sofa for a young couple. I was nervous because it was my first real opportunity to prove myself. I remember spending hours choosing the right colors and materials, trying to make the space both functional and warm. When the project was finally finished, and I saw their reaction , the smiles on their faces and how they couldn’t stop talking about how cozy it felt , that moment was unforgettable. It was the first time I truly felt proud of what I had created.

In a way, I think chemistry and design aren’t that different. Both are about combining elements , colors, materials, or even emotions to create something new and balanced. When I design a space, I feel like I’m mixing invisible ingredients that can change how people feel in their homes. That connection between creativity and science makes my job even more meaningful to me.
