Focus on the Destination, but prepare for the Journey

The right shoes at the wrong time

By Ayoni SinclairPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

Have you ever had a morning where everything just went right? I have. I am talking a hop, skip and a jump from fairytale. Birds almost singing at my window as i didn't have to fight with my hair, eyebrows almost like twins, close sisters at most and the 3lbs i lost seemed to help that blouse sit just that little bit better on my shrinking belly. I mean this morning was just great. I was ... feeling myself. Not literally, but feeling good and optimistic about the day ahead. I had to go into the office and even though its a germ trap i felt OK about it. I had a my coffee in my travel mug , sun is shining. I was looking like the cocoa Esmeralda as my bouncy peruvian bundles tumbled onto my shoulders. I mean i was serving hair and FACE hunnty! So I placed my manicured size 8s into my diamante strappy wedges. Grabbed my light jacket, my work bag, stepped out into the sunshine and locked the door.

The first 5 steps

I took the first 5 steps out. Not bad… higher than I anticipated but comfortable. Head phones in. Singing as i swing my ample frame. Another 5 steps and I started to regret the coconut oil I applied earlier. I began to slip inside the shoe. With every step I rocked forwards and backwards, Crushing and splaying my little sausage toes. Ladies and gents I was about as stable as a lilo in a typhoon!

After struggling to counterbalance my saddle bags and cursing the second helping of cake I ate the day before; I arrive at my bus stop. My usual 7 minute jaunt took in fact almost double the time as I tried not to break myself or anyone else.

As I sat down sweating like i just stole something. The glaringly obvious truth was … I wore the wrong Phuckin Shoes. Doing so cost me time, effort and could have taken my life. Yes I’m exaggerating there but you catch my drift. These beautiful demon shoes were only good for the first 5 steps. So as i sat still sweating and heavy breathing i remembered the second bus journey i needed to take and the further walk down the narrow path to my office and my heart sank. I did not have enough time to go back and change to make it back and not be late.

My beautiful morning had turned to painful throbbing.

The issue was not the shoe though. I had a meeting in the office with all the other managers and so i needed to look good but.It was the journey that got me messed up. Right shoe wrong occasion. My Desi wedge is to be adored as I Sit, Laze or glide out of a vehicle that doesn’t hearken noah’s Ark.

As I delved into my tardis bag for some sort of help i felt a familiar object its ridges, the tongue and yep laces. I had luckily packed my trainers. a little scuffed and definately squashed. They did not match my outfit, but baby they felt sooo good. I actually let out a pleasurable sigh of relief as i pushed my throbbing toes into the cushiony goodness.

As i now rambled on less bouncy but still swinging, i contemplated. What if i didn't have them, i am so glad my momma made me into a just in case kind of girl. As i held the conference in my head playing out scenarios where i call into work with an excuse as to why i am miserably late; I saw that in life I’ve done the same thing. I’ve often focussed on the destination but forgotten about the journey.

That old saying ‘There is a time and place for everything’ really rings true as we often apply the right thing at the wrong time. Or like me not choose the right tools for the job. We may not always know the destination and in truth it’s the journey that counts. What we must do though is recognise what we need, when.

The moral of the story is...

Life is one big ass journey! The destination is good to have in mind but please don't forget about the journey. The journey makes or breaks you. The journey of life is often the painful bit, the enjoyable bit, the hurtful bit the crazy laughable bit. Whilst we can never know what life brings or swings our way, we have to bear in mind that not all roads are smooth and from time to time will need be ready to walk uphill. This may mean back to basics, this may mean something new, but they key thing is to know and trust yourself enough to switch it up when you need to. To get where you need to. We can't always pack light, but we can always pack right!
