Do These 4 Things To Begin Your Digital Nomad Career

Work from anywhere without worrying about money

By Ashley M BurksPublished 4 years ago 4 min read

With remote work becoming more popular and accessible, more and more people are considering working online. And I’ve also noticed that after a certain amount of time, people don’t just want to work online, they want to work online and travel. And that is essentially what the digital nomad lifestyle contains.

Traveling the world and making a living online are the key pillars to being a digital nomad. You live a location-independent lifestyle and have your own business that you can use to fuel this lifestyle.

I started working online 3 years ago, but I started living the digital nomad lifestyle in 2020 and it has been the best decision for me. I love traveling and experiencing cultures and I enjoy having my own business. I’m always driven and inspired. It’s a great way to live a meaningful life. If you are interested in avoiding the common mistakes digital nomads make when they get started on their journey, you can join my mentoring program. The advice I give is life changing and it will give you the mindset to go into the world and create the life that you want to live and not a life that you settle for. Here are more details about the program.

So, let’s get into the 4 tips that you should do to get started on your digital nomad journey.

1. Start an online business

Developing a reliable source of income online is super important to have a sense of security when you travel. I always tell people, that you don’t want to travel the world and live in poverty.

You can approach starting an income-generating business a couple of different ways.

One - Research high-demand freelance services and create a business that meets the demands. You will already have a built in audience that you can tap into and you’ll be able to learn new skills in the process.

Two - Use your current skills and create and a business around your current abilities. You can tap into your current professional networks, and expand your client base after your first couple of clients.

The key ingredients to starting an online business is matching your skillset with the needs of other people. This will ensure that there is demand for your services.

2. Begin researching travel destinations for likability and cost of living

When you think of living in another country, what lifestyle do you imagine living? Do you want to go to a beach town? Do you want to live in a major city? Begin researching destinations and determine if you like the place and if this city has the things that you need to feel comfortable.

Don’t just go to a place where most digital nomads go. Find a place that you can feel comfortable in. Research things to do, popular restaurants, expat groups and etc.

Find a place that you will want to explore and experience.

3. Create a savings plan

I’ve met many people that were traveling and didn’t have money or a reliable accommodation. They were volunteering and just hoping that people would give them a place to stay.

This is not the lifestyle that you want to live in another country. Before you begin traveling, start saving your money. You need several thousands of dollars before traveling to another country.

Businesses have ebbs and flows. One minute you’re making a lot of money and the next thing you know, you aren’t making any money. You need a savings plan to accommodate the natural ebbs and flows of business. Create savings goals and make steps every week or month to meet your goals. You have to be financially disciplined.

4. Follow other nomads so that you can get a sense of what the lifestyle feels like

The digital nomad lifestyle is a non-traditional lifestyle. It’s rare that people are familiar with this lifestyle before they generate the interest. I recommend finding a couple of travelers and following their channels/blogs.

This will help you get a sense for what to expect while living in other countries. I’ve learned so much by reading about other digital nomads’ lifestyle. Everyone’s experience is slightly different, but there are similarities in goals and desires to be location-independent. So you can really learn a lot from reading and watching videos from other nomads.

If you are interested in avoiding the common mistakes digital nomads make when they get started on their journey, you can join my mentoring program. The advice I give is life changing and it will give you the mindset to go into the world and create the life that you want to live and not a life that you settle for.
