Compete with yourself

Compete with yourself

A Chinese Peking Opera master went to the United States alone to study Western drama. He went through thousands of hardships and struggled for ten years, and finally landed the highest palace of Western drama art -- Broadway stage. In the past five years, he has gained international fame by starring in 2,478 performances of the classic drama Miss Saigon, known as the "100-year miracle of Broadway", which filled the blank in Broadway history that there were no Asian leading roles. He is Wang Luoyang.

Born in Luoyang, Henan province, Wang began studying Peking Opera at the age of 11 and later switched to majoring in Musical Instruments. Because he studied drama in a drama school since childhood and had never been exposed to English, his English college entrance examination results were terrible. After graduating from the university, Wang Luoyang resolutely gave up the opportunity to teach in the school, just with their strength, and English strength, and went to the other side of the ocean to study music -- a completely unfamiliar field.

When he first came to the United States, Wang Luoyang could only speak a few simple everyday words and could not understand the professor's fast English lectures. When the professor asks a question, say YES more often and say no less, said Jo, who is studying directing.

On the fourth day of class, the professor asked him because he was the first Chinese to study drama. When Wang Luoyang heard this, his head was big and he had to answer "yes". A series of questions, a series of Ye's. The professor is very angry: "You don't understand, don't come to class." Wang Luoyang still resounding answer: "Yes". Elicited a roar of laughter.

After class, the professor took Wang Luoyang to his office and gave him an English test paper. He racked his brains and only got a few points right. So, the school immediately informed him: to cancel scholarship or expulsion. Wang was kicked out of the University of Louisiana.

Desperate, he made a living painting and teaching tai chi. I remember that on Christmas day, Wang Luoyang walked to Broadway, the "temple" in his heart, to save $1 on the subway, and vowed to stage on this stage one day.

Driven to the end of his rope, Wang Luoyang began to accumulate his creative ambition and compete with himself: he would never cut his hair if he did not learn English. For a whole year, he had not been to the barbershop, and his hair was so long that it fluttered over his shoulders like an Indian.

To learn English well, he reads newspapers to paralyzed old people, babysits, delivers food, MOWS the lawn... He does anything that helps him practice English: to remember words, he spends time in his pocket, bag, classroom, room... Each has a small dictionary, thumb through, and memorize at any time.

Three years later, he has won over critical Broadway directors and rapturous applause with his clear, precise pronunciation and bright, rounded lines and dialogue.

In fact, in life, Wang Luoyang is also a person who likes to compete with himself. When he first came to America, he was untidy and unkempt, which seriously affected his study and work. I remember rehearsing a scene in Romeo and Juliet, and although he was skilled and articulate, none of the girls wanted to play Juliet with him. He was very confused and asked the teacher why. But the teacher asked him: "Don't you know it yourself? You have bad breath." The teacher's words, such as a blow to the head, suddenly woke Wang Luoyang.

The next day, Wang went to see a dentist. The doctor was very surprised after examination and said the tooth stone was too deep and in urgent need of treatment. Interestingly, instead of taking him to the treatment room, the doctor took him to the medical school classroom and said to the students, "I finally found a case before you graduated with good teeth that had never been cleaned but had very bad roots. You each wash two, handle well, can graduate." Little did he know that he would become an example of poor hygiene in America.

To completely eradicate the bad habits that do not speak hygiene, shape a clean and tidy new image. Wang Luoyang began to brush his teeth every day, more than once a day. He has to brush his teeth after all meals and before the show to keep his breath fresh. Not only that, he washes his hair, showers, and changes clothes every day. After that, wherever he went, he won the respect and love of the people.

Wang Luoyang through his tenacious struggle and unremitting efforts, before and after eight examinations, and finally on the Broadway stage for the first time carved the Chinese leading actor's epic shining name.

"It's better to compete with yourself than with others," Wang said of his success.

Yes, life is like that. If you want to change the attitude of others, it is better to change your own words and deeds. By changing yourself and competing with yourself, you can earn respect and trust. You can also achieve your dreams and achieve great things.
