The School Nurse

As the afternoon arrived the recreation bell rang, allowing grammar school nurse Mary to entertain the sandwich she prepared the night before while watching episodic television featuring competitive romances.

Not even five minutes elapsed, and two children were standing by the doorway wearing athletic equipment and playground make up.

“He tried to slide and steal my home plate,” Abigail expressed, “now I have a fractured lit.”

“You mean a bloody lip,” Nurse Mary corrected.

“That too.”

Not to be defeated Joshua presented his side, “Antonio performed a perfect bunt, and I ran like a sacrificial lamb wanting to be caught,”

“And” Nurse Mary requested more information.

“And I tried to score by plowing into Abigail as she guarded the sacred area,” Joshua continued, “when we collided all the protection, she was wearing gave me a boo boo on my finger.”

Nurse Mary told them they came to the right place. With a loving smile she put a band aid on Joshua’s finger and applied special lipstick ointment to Abigail.

When the procedures were completed, Abigail apologized to Joshua for not allowing him to win the game and Joshua replied, “I forgive you, but it was Antonio who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

“That is true, he is sitting in class,” Abigail mentioned.

“And we are receiving tender loving care from Nurse Mary,” Joshua added.

Operation MRI

One day in the valley Joey was not happy and wanted something in a dangerous place.

“My mommy told me not to do it,” the grammar school student explained to Nurse Mary, “but I did it. I climbed up and saved the cookie jar from the monster and now I have a fractured lit for the mission.”

“You might have a fractured hip,” Nurse Mary clarified, “and we are going into the secret hideout to take classified pictures using the super deluxe MRI device.”

“An MRI machine!” Joey exclaimed as Nurse Mary took full control, wheeling the chair down the dark hallway.

Joey started to prepare and the two entered the mysterious location, “Now, I am going to put you on this bed, get comfy,”

While Joey rested on his back Nurse Mary placed earphones on his head, “I will put on some hip music for you,” she softly spoke.

As all that jazz played Joey relaxed trusting Nurse Mary who in the back was taking the X Ray style photographs.

Soon the procedure ended, and Nurse Mary returned Joey to his mother outside in the waiting room.

“So, how did he do?”

“Very good,” Nurse Mary reported back, “and it seems he only has a bruised hip, it was not fractured.”

“That is wonderful,” his mother gratefully acknowledged.

“Take two aspirins and you will be fine in the morning,” Nurse Mary prescribed.

“Mommy,” Joey interrupted, “I know what I did was wrong, but could you forgive me?” The child requested.

Staring into his eyes the mother grinned, “yes I forgive you, but you are going to have to make a sacrifice.”

“I knew there was a catch,”

“You have to give up going on adventures to see if there are monsters in the cookie jar.”

“I think that is a good idea,” Nurse Mary agreed handing Joey a lollipop.

The Student Nurse Facing Reality

Years before sly Rocky Balboa enjoyed award winning Oscar’s punch, innocent young Felix quietly accepted destiny granted to him. Still studying nursing at the local Ivy League institution, Mary fulfilled her early morning duties preparing one child for surgery.

Standing inside the medicine room the committed health care worker carefully measured the proper dosage amount. Seeing the sun had not even started to rise, she quietly walked into the hospital room not disturbing the other kids fast asleep.

“Felix,” Nurse Mary whispered holding the loaded weapon, “it’s time to get up so I can give you an injection to make you sleep.”

“But I do not want a jab,” Felix requested, “I want to finish my class project for school.”

“You will have time to do that tomorrow,” Nurse Mary ensured.

Noticing Felix was wearing his football sleeping attire the student experienced reality performing a textbook task, injecting a needle. Before that could happen, Nurse Morgan had to cut the pant leg.

“These are my favorite pajamas,” Felix pleaded, “can’t you do it in my arm?”

“No, honey,” Nurse Mary told him, snipping away at the cloth. Quickly inserting the lower body with the drug, Felix was now ready for the morning appointment in the operating room.

Later that day, sitting in class, Nurse Mary reflected about what she did, ruining the bedtime attire and the guilt needed confrontation. Returning to the pediatric ward the next day, Nurse Mary found Felix working on the class project inside the solarium.

“Felix,” Nurse Mary entered, “I wanted to apologize for yesterday, waking you up only to put you back to sleep, and I hope you forgive me for the pajamas.”

Looking up from his assignment Felix accepted the apology.

“Here I brought you brand new pajamas,” Nurse Mary offered, “but they are not football, they are horses.”

“That is okay,” Felix responded with appreciation.

“I hear horses are a better sport, anyway,” Nurse Morgan put a positive spin on a sensitive situation.
