Beating Cancer Gives You Superpowers
By Darius Cherry

In my last story about being a track/car enthusiast I mentioned at the age of 11 I was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma cancer. It was very brutal but I was motivated and driven to beat it. I am not here to ramble about cars or how successful I am after I beat it. This isn’t one of those cliches where I am a billionaire and I am donating to charities on TV with some trophy wife and 3 kids. When I battled that silent deadly disease it gave me a better outlook on life and the more I got older I was able to understand more that having cancer was more of a gift then a curse after realizing what I beat. As kids we are not really taught how to deal with tragic situations or disasters, we have to be blinded or forced to forget as we get older. I can tell you with cancer it is a little different because you will never be able to forget it no matter how hard you try because anytime you apply for a job, go to the doctor, or anywhere with a questionnaire that has past/current disease check off sheet you will always be reminded of what you went through. I will now get into how this gave me superpowers, I am sure you were expecting some freak mutation or some cgi film scene. I remember I got hired at my first career and I was 21 everyone around me was at least 25 or older, it was already hard to relate at my age because I never went to college so just having a career around people who have families and other responsibilities was just raising the social anxiety.
The 90 day period passed after my training and I was officially hired and available for benefits like health insurance and time off. I went to my manager and asked him “what was the coverage like for a cancer survivor”? He then was in shock and awe after hearing about what I went through. At first I kind of shrugged it off and then he started chatting with me more and a few weeks later it was like I didn’t have to look over my shoulder at work anymore or worry about sitting by myself. It gave me a feeling of relief like no other. I was my own boss at work but of course no one likes the favorite or cool guy at work. It never lasts long but that's just one of the cons of being a cancer survivor at work, people expect you to do more with your life but that ability I just described to you is the power of attraction.Beating cancer gives you different abilities and it is crazy because this is real life not your average cartoon comic. I will say I am sure you still can't avoid death, that is still a thing, the ultimate ability that you have after beating cancer is being able to have positivity for the rest of your life. That
Is one of the best superpowers to me in my opinion besides invisibility or telekinesis.
I can have the worst day which I have had and the outcome was me overcoming it and going to sleep with a smile on my face. I won’t sit here and tell you every day will be easy to overcome, you just have to let nature take its course. It has been said “God gives his battles to his strongest warriors.” To me that means God just gave me powers and I am alright with that, I hope whoever is reading this though can help you with whatever you are going through. I can understand life is hard for everyone no matter if it is cancer or not, so I know you have the inner strength to overcome it. Who knows, you might have a power you do not know about.
