At The Edge Of Breakthrough

The Emotions That Surge Through Us

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published about 2 hours ago 3 min read

Have you ever been working so hard...

To get to a breakthrough?

The completion of a project...

The development of a new skill...

A discovery that no one has been able to figure out...

Whatever the breakthrough is...

There is a feeling...

When you are at the edge of the breakthrough...

But have not quite broken through.

It is there...

So close...

But so far...

You can taste it in the air...

But not yet on the tongue.

It is tempting to try to rush things...

But you know that if you do...

You could destroy all the progress you've made so far.

You want to get there so badly...

But it is not yet time.

When you are standing at the edge of breakthrough...

It can feel so difficult.

You may even wonder...

Is the breakthrough real?

Or is it just wishful thinking?

A mirage?

A delusion?

You hear so often about those who are successful...

About their moment of breakthrough and how it changed everything...

But what if it was just a fluke?

What if we are just falling into the trap of survivorship bias...

Where we are more likely to believe something is true or possible...

Because of the few successes that have occurred...

While completely ignoring the significantly larger number of failures that have occurred in the same manner?

Are we really at the edge of a breakthrough...

Or are we simply at the edge of what we know...

About to fall off a cliffside into the abyss?

How long will it take...

To find out for sure?

Are we as close as we believe?

Or is it significantly further than we imagined?

Which brings us to a new struggle...

If we are unsure what the final result will be...

Is it really worth pursuing it?

Would it not be better to give up now...

Before we fall off a ledge?

Surely it is better to be safe than it is to be sorry when it comes to this...

Or is it?

Because that is also how most people decide to play it...

But what does it get them at the end of it all?

A deathbed...

And the feeling of regret for never having discovered if breakthrough was possible.

Is that how we want to end our lives?

In regret?

You will make your decision...

But will it be the right one?

When these different emotions begin to surge through us...

It can be difficult to see clearly.

The stress and anxiety that these questions stir up inside of us...

Blur our vision further...

Making us defer to our oldest patterns...

A survival mechanism...

Which may not be serving us in the ways that we need at this moment.

A good tool used in the wrong situation is not useful...

And that is what we must contest with here.

If we are to move forward from this point...

To not live a life of regret...

And find that breakthrough that we seek...

We must also battle these internal instincts that are screaming at us to run...

Telling us that it is not worth it...

That it is better to survive...

Even if it is in the background.

Will we allow these instincts to survive to take over...

Even if it costs us our future...

Or...

Will we seek to continue forth...

And obtain our breakthrough?
