Are overthinking and decision-making related?

Do not overthink!

You need to make a choice regarding a straightforward issue, but you keep ruminating over the advantages and disadvantages of the situation, debating the issue in your head, and considering completely unrelated issues. You're simply not able to come to a choice.

At every moment when you are trying to make up your mind, additional thoughts and ideas jump into your head, and you spend time delving into them. You can't seem to make up your mind about anything. Are you acquainted with the circumstances of this situation? It may sound unusual, but frequently the initial idea is the correct one, but the mind is not persuaded and continues to explore other choices and alternative routes to reach a conclusion.

As time goes on, it gets increasingly difficult to make up one's mind about anything. As more and more thoughts, ideas, and alternatives flood into your mind, you begin to feel as if your head is about to burst into flames. You are being overrun by ideas, and you are unable to stop them.

Like attempting to sail a little boat in a large ocean with huge waves while being hopelessly thrown about and losing control of the boat, this is what it feels like. In this case, we are talking about overthinking — the tendency of the mind to overthink, which may often only confuse situations.

Overthinking happens not just while dealing with major issues that need deliberation and analysis but also when dealing with trivial choices that are of little actual significance. Most of the time, individuals overthink basic and insignificant issues that take no more than a few seconds of thought. They simply can't seem to get their thoughts out of their heads.

You may encounter this situation when you want to watch a movie but are unable to decide which one to see, or when you want to purchase a pair of pants but are unable to decide which pair of trousers to purchase. In addition, while deciding what kind of employment to pursue, whether to rent or purchase a home or what to order from a restaurant's menu, overthinking might occur.

In all of these instances, the mind continues to consider rather than make a decision and move on with the task at hand. If you don't get rid of this habit, it will only grow in strength over time. Overthinking happens not just in situations when you must make a decision but also in practically every other scenario in life. Essentially, this is a type of irrepressible activity that continues throughout the day and sometimes into the night, preventing you from falling asleep as one idea follows another without a moment's respite.

The fact that this behavior is automatic means that you are not constantly conscious of it. Generally speaking, most individuals consider overthinking to be a normal activity, and they only become aware of it when they are trying to concentrate on something, study, make a choice or complete a job on time. Then they become aware of their tendency to overthink, as well as how their mind is always debating, analyzing, commenting, and jumping from one idea to another.

They see firsthand how unpredictable the mind can be at these moments. They soon realize that they are unable to halt this uncontrollable whirlwind of mental activity, calm their minds, or concentrate on the task at hand. The act of contemplating is a beneficial activity; nevertheless, excessive contemplation is not.

It just serves to exhaust the intellect and does nothing productively. Overthinking is a tendency that keeps you from living in the present now, from concentrating on what you are doing, and from fully appreciating your life. Also, it has a negative impact on your ability to make decisions!
