Achieving Success: Habits to Develop

John P. Dundon shares some habits to develop to help you achieve success.

Good habits make the world go ‘round, or at least that’s how it frequently feels. The most successful people in the world have perfected certain habits, increasing their effectiveness and productivity. Believe it or not, perfecting these habits will help improve your life!

The truth is that everything you accomplish is based, at least in part, on your habits. Think about it. If you’re the type of person to finish every task you start, that shows in your productivity. The reverse is also true.

With that in mind, let’s look at some of the most critical habits in terms of success.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is arguably one of the most important habits to master, especially if you’re trying to start your own business. This is the ability to discipline yourself, hold yourself accountable, and stay motivated. In other words, it is a foundational habit for many different skills and habits.

Consider this: a person who creates and maintains their goals is much more likely to succeed than those who cannot follow through on personal promises. This is because they have the discipline to follow through. You can work on this habit by starting with small goals and commitments, gradually increasing in scale as you go.

Goal Setter

Let’s talk about goals. Setting goals is a great way to improve your skills and life. It’s also a great way to make steady progress, regardless of what it is you’re aiming to achieve. Those that set regular goals are generally more capable of attaining and keeping their goals, as it has become a habit for them.

Start by setting small daily goals, such as getting up early in the morning or getting to work on time. As time progresses (and as you consistently achieve these goals), consider increasing the challenge.

To-Do Lists

Many consider to-do lists and checklists to be a bit of a time-waster, but the truth is that maintaining these lists is actually a good habit to have. Writing down a list of things to do for the day helps you organize your thoughts and tasks while setting expectations for the day.

Admittedly, writing to-do lists may not work for everyone - but many successful people have found it to be the perfect habit for them. To try it out, write down everything you want to be done in a day. Try to order it by priority, with the most critical tasks on the top. Now that you feel better about this task, try maintaining the habit for a week or two and see how it goes. Does it help? If so, try to keep doing it every morning!

Practicing Self-Care

It may sound counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to find success is by first taking care of yourself. Successful people understand the importance of self-care. After all, running a business is challenging when your personal needs are crumbling.

Make time for self-care, even for a few minutes each day. Do things for yourself, such as exercise and eating right. And lastly, don’t forget that sitting down and relaxing is okay. There is no rule saying you have to be productive all the time.

Positivity

A positive attitude can do wonders for one’s life. For example, a person who goes about their day expecting bad things to happen is more likely to notice the negative - and miss the good moments. By having a positive attitude, you can spot positive things in the world, including opportunities worth pursuing.

Changing your mindset takes a bit of work, but it is possible. Start small by being aware of how you react to things, including how you phrase something. For example, instead of saying that you had a bad day, say that you can do better tomorrow.
