5 Things I Stopped Doing to Feel Happier Every Day

Sometimes it’s what you remove, not what you add, that changes everything.

By Express LanePublished 7 months ago 2 min read

A few months ago, I realized I was more stressed, tired, and distracted than ever — even though I thought I was doing “everything right.” I had my to-do lists, my goals, and my endless self-help articles. But none of it made me feel lighter or truly happy.

Then one morning, I read a simple line: “Happiness is not about adding more — sometimes it’s about removing what drains you.” That single thought changed everything for me.

Here are five things I stopped doing that actually helped me feel happier, calmer, and more in control of my day.

1️⃣ I stopped saying ‘yes’ to everything

I used to agree to every plan, every favor, every extra task at work — even when I felt exhausted. I thought being busy made me useful. But all it did was drain my energy and leave me with no time for myself.

Now, I say ‘no’ more often — kindly, but firmly. It felt uncomfortable at first, but now it’s freeing. I protect my time like it’s precious, because it is.

2️⃣ I stopped checking my phone first thing in the morning

This was one of my biggest mood killers. I’d wake up, grab my phone, and instantly fill my mind with news, notifications, and other people’s problems. By the time I got out of bed, I already felt behind.

Now, I leave my phone on airplane mode for the first 30 minutes. I stretch, drink water, and take a few quiet breaths. Starting my day without instant chaos makes a huge difference.

3️⃣ I stopped comparing my life online

Scrolling through Instagram and TikTok used to be harmless fun — until I realized it made me feel worse about my own life. Seeing other people’s highlights made my own progress feel small.

I didn’t quit social media completely — but I unfollowed accounts that made me feel ‘less than.’ Now I follow pages that inspire me or teach me something. No more mindless comparison.

4️⃣ I stopped trying to fix everything at once

I used to make giant, impossible plans: “Tomorrow I’ll wake up at 5 AM, run 5 miles, eat perfectly, read 50 pages…” Then I’d fail by noon and feel bad.

Now, I do one small thing at a time. Drink more water. Sleep 30 minutes earlier. Celebrate small wins. Less pressure, more peace.

5️⃣ I stopped ignoring my body

I used to treat my body like it was a machine that should keep going no matter what. I’d skip meals, stay up late, drink too much coffee, and wonder why I felt awful.

Now, I listen. If I’m tired, I rest. If I’m hungry, I eat something real. If my mind is racing, I take a short walk. This small kindness to myself improved my mood more than any fancy hack.

Final Thoughts

Happiness is not something you chase once — it’s something you build daily by protecting your energy. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is stop doing what drains you.

Maybe some of these will help you too. And if you have something you let go of that made you happier — I’d love to know.
