20 Quotes To Lead You Towards True Maturity
- David Stidston

Many people believe that maturity is nothing more than the transition from adolescence to adulthood, or perhaps the time in which we reach seniority. Many people will also use the word against someone else, when they believe that particular individual is behaving in a childish manner, as their actions, reactions, or language, is deemed to be at the level of a minor, and lacking in sophistication, sensibility, and practicality. Maturity is defined as being "fully developed physically, fully grown, and having reached a stage of mental or emotional development characteristic of an adult." Personally, I believe the definition is very grey, because it allows anyone to draw their own conclusion to exactly what maturity is. There's no set age mentioned, nor is there an exact level we can truly determine the mental or emotional development characteristic of an adult has been reached. So how do we know when we have matured as a person, or how do we know when we have reached maturity itself? Let's hone in on two particular words in that definition to begin with, them being "fully grown". Straight away, many of us would automatically think that being fully grown is when we have reached our maximum height. We simply can't grow any taller, therefore we believe we are fully grown. The first component to the definition though, which states "fully developed physically", refers to the physical sense of the definition, and then it refers to growth thereafter. As we can see, "fully developed physically" doesn't complete the full definition. Our physical development, which includes our height, is only one aspect of maturity. Growth relates to all components of the body, and when we think of the body, in typical human fashion, we naturally think of the physical side of it, whilst totally forgetting that there is a mental component to the body also, being our mind and brain. One thing is for sure, walking out those school or college gates for the last time, doesn't mean we are walking out educated, wise, knowledgeable, and mature, by any means. In fact, the day we take that step out of our school education days, becomes the day we actually begin our true education in life, being life itself.
I believe the best way to constitute what maturity is, is by summing it up in seven words; attitude, behavior, experience, resilience, perseverance, courage, and patience. Regarding attitude, this comes back to our mindset, and our response to certain circumstances and situations. It's about being positive minded, optimistic, proactive, motivated, and goals driven, and not being someone who is toxic, pessimistic, and negative minded. Regarding behavior, this comes back to treating others with respect, courtesy, kindness, support, encouragement, generosity, care, and love, not someone who is filled with bitterness, anger, frustration, and therefore treats others with disrespect, unkindness, and nastiness. Regarding experience, this comes from learning things for ourselves, not what others tell us to believe to be the truth. It's about getting out and trying different things, refusing to be boxed into the same routine and schedule, discovering new cultures, and embracing the journey towards achieving our goals. Regarding resilience, it's about accepting the various challenges, adversities, failures, rejections, and setbacks, that come our way, accepting them, acknowledging them, and then positively going about overcoming and resolving them. Regarding perseverance, it's about setting ourselves goals in life, striving for the happiness, future, and success we desire, and then committing ourselves to achieve it, no matter the obstacles and opposition along the way. Regarding courage, it's about having the boldness to take risks in order to achieve what we desire, about facing up to our fears and doubts, about continually stepping out of our comfort zone, and being brave in facing up to our friends, family, partner, and anyone else who dares stand in the way of us pursuing our goals and happiness in life, no matter what they believe. Regarding patience, it's about having the understanding that success and goals achievement takes a significant amount of time, and having the capability of waiting those several years before we finally accomplish our desires. These seven characteristics and traits are what provides us with the opportunity to learn, then ultimately to grow and develop, and it's that growth and development that leads us to maturity. If we aren't possessing these characteristics and traits right now, then we need to change ourselves, otherwise we deny ourselves the opportunity to learn, grow, develop, and mature. Even without the success we desire, just through learning, growing, developing, and maturing, along the journey, is success in itself. True maturity is attitude, behavior, experience, resilience, perseverance, courage, and patience, that I mention above, not age! Here are 20 quotes to help lead you to true maturity in life.
