Distance of Love

Patience

By Aniece VernonPublished about a year ago 3 min read

In the heart of a small town, two young souls met at the most ordinary of places—a crowded high school hallway. It was there that Ashley first bumped into Romaine, a boy with a shy smile and a sparkle in his eye. Neither of them knew it at the time, but that simple meeting was the start of a love story that would endure time, distance, and trials.

Ashley and Romaine became inseparable, the kind of high school sweethearts everyone admired. They went to football games together, spent long evenings talking about their dreams, and shared countless firsts—first dance, first kiss, and first promise to always be there for one another. Romaine was the strong and silent type, but he was always gentle and caring with Ashley. She, in turn, was his greatest supporter, his best friend who knew him better than anyone else.

After graduation, life started pulling them in different directions. Ashley took a job at a local call center, hoping to help her family and gain some independence. Romaine, on the other hand, had a different calling. He had always dreamed of serving his country, and soon after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. It was a decision they both knew was right for him, but it also meant that they’d have to face a new kind of challenge: a long-distance relationship.

When Romaine left for basic training, Ashley felt like a part of her heart had gone with him. They were used to seeing each other every day, and now she found herself waiting for the rare phone calls and letters. It was hard—some days harder than she could express—but every time she heard his voice or read his words, she was reminded of why she loved him. His dedication, his bravery, and his love for her were as strong as ever.

Despite the distance, their bond only grew. Ashley found ways to keep herself busy; she was good at her job, connecting with people over the phone with her friendly voice and kind words. Her coworkers often noticed the way her eyes lit up when she talked about Romaine. Even on the toughest days, the thought of him gave her strength.

And Romaine, despite the demanding nature of his new life, never forgot to show Ashley how much he cared. He sent her letters from every new place he was stationed, sharing stories about his experiences and the new friends he made. He always ended his letters the same way: “No matter where I go, you are my home, Ashley.” Those words kept her going, giving her a sense of comfort on the nights she missed him most.

One day, after nearly two years of being apart, Romaine called Ashley with a voice full of excitement. He was coming home on leave, and he had a surprise for her. They planned to meet at their favorite spot—the little park near their old high school where they had shared so many memories.

When Ashley arrived, she found Romaine standing there, looking as handsome as ever in his Army uniform. He smiled at her, the same shy smile she’d fallen in love with all those years ago. But this time, there was something different. He got down on one knee and pulled out a small, velvet box.

“Ashley,” he said, his voice thick with emotion, “I’ve loved you since the moment we met, and even though we’ve spent so much time apart, I’ve never doubted that you’re the one I want to spend the rest of my life with. Will you marry me?”

Tears welled up in Ashley’s eyes as she nodded, unable to find the words. She threw her arms around him, laughing and crying at the same time. “Yes, Romaine, a thousand times yes.”

The wedding was small and intimate, just close family and friends. It wasn’t a grand ceremony, but it was perfect. Ashley walked down the aisle in a simple white dress, and Romaine stood waiting for her, looking every bit the hero she’d always known him to be. They exchanged vows that spoke of years of shared history and promises for the future.

As they kissed, sealing their marriage, it felt like the entire world melted away. In that moment, it was just the two of them, as it had always been and as it always would be—two high school sweethearts who had found their way back to each other despite everything.

Now, whenever Romaine has to leave again for duty, Ashley waits with the same patience and love she’s always had. Because she knows that no matter where he goes, their hearts are forever intertwined. And when he comes home, it’s not just to a house, but to her—his best friend, his partner, his forever love.
