Yoga: A Teacher’s Commentary

An Overview of Yoga

By Dr. Marc Sattva NoblittPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Yoga, an integral part of ancient Indian tradition, touches both spiritual and physical realms. Although its origins are shrouded in the mists of time, the term itself has existed for at least five millennia, representing a profound system of spiritual cultivation. Today, yoga practices focus on enhancing physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being. Through a blend of flexibility, strength, endurance, and balance training, complemented by breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation, you can achieve a harmonious state of health. With an estimated 300 million practitioners worldwide in 2024, yoga's popularity and recognition continue to grow.

In the late 1960s, Yogi Bhajan introduced Kundalini Yoga to the West. The ancient Sanskrit term "Kundalini," meaning "coiled snake," refers to a dormant energy at the base of your spine. Through specialized yoga sequences and pranayama techniques, Kundalini Yoga seeks to awaken and release this energy, promoting stress reduction and emotional balance. You may find it elevates your consciousness and uplifts your mood.

Hatha yoga, encompassing various physical yoga practices, derives its name from Sanskrit words symbolizing the sun and the moon. This reflects the balance and harmony it seeks to instill. Unlike more forceful approaches, Hatha yoga emphasizes consistent practice over time, gradually cultivating strength and resilience. Through poses, meditation, and pranayama, Hatha yoga is ideal if you're just beginning or seeking a traditional yoga experience.

Yin yoga, influenced by martial arts philosophy, combines stretching techniques with yoga poses, encouraging you to hold poses for extended periods. Its slow-paced, meditative movements target deep connective tissues, promoting flexibility and joint health. Iyengar yoga, founded by B.K.S. Iyengar, emphasizes precise alignment and the use of props to support and deepen your poses. Known for its meticulous attention to detail, Iyengar yoga fosters strength, balance, and flexibility.

Ashtanga yoga follows a specific sequence of poses, with each posture building upon the previous one. Its rigorous, physically demanding nature appeals if you're seeking a dynamic yoga practice. Vinyasa yoga, often called "flow yoga," synchronizes movement with breath, promoting fluidity and conscious awareness. Bikram yoga, created by Bikram Choudhury, involves practicing a set series of poses in a heated room, purportedly enhancing flexibility and detoxification. It has since branched into variations of Hot Yoga.

In recent years, healing and restorative yoga styles have gained traction, focusing on gentle, rejuvenating movements and deep relaxation. These practices, often incorporating props and gentle meditation, promote healing, relaxation, and overall well-being.
