This Amish Cough Syrup Is Made From Food

And With Things You Already Have On Hand

By Rootbound HomesteadPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

No one likes getting sick, and even fewer enjoy taking nasty cough syrup. I learned how to stop coughs from an ex-Amish person, and the taste reminds me of honey and maple syrup which is way better than that store bought stuff. And the natural ingredients will have you feeling better in no time.

What is it?

Amish Cough Syrup is a consumable natural syrup that treats colds, the flu, coughs, and sore throats. Like most Amish remedies, it contains only edible and natural ingredients. Like all family remedies, there are variations in secret recipes. This recipe here contains ingredients such as cayenne pepper, ginger, and apple cider vinegar. Some recipes use alcohol, onions, garlic, ect... this one is specific to things you have on hand in your kitchen right now and can drink immediately.

The health advantages of these therapeutic foods help prevent phlegm buildup and soothe your sore throat. Research suggests that consuming a single spoonful of honey before bedtime can relieve a cough more effectively than using over-the-counter cough medications. Honey's minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants eliminate free radicals and provide your body with the necessary energy to fight disease. Additionally, honey creates a barrier that shields your throat. Honey provides minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, niacin, potassium, riboflavin, and zinc, which not only protect but also aid in the healing of injured tissue.

Consuming lemons is one of the best ways to receive vitamin C. A third of your daily required consumption of vitamin C can be found in one whole lemon. Due to the detoxifying and antioxidant properties of lemons, vitamin C is widely recognized for its ability to boost immunity. The human immune system solely depends on copper, iron, manganese, and zinc, all of which lemons supply. Their acidic nature helps break down mucus and clear any blockages.

Ginger is a power hospital, rather than a powerhouse. The phytochemicals in ginger are responsible for its health-promoting properties. For these reasons ginger aids in lung expansion and phlegm release. Additionally, with its anti-inflammatory qualities, it can aid in the relief of an irritated and painful throat.

Cayenne Pepper contains several health-promoting chemicals, its effectiveness as a coughing aid is primarily due to one specific active ingredient: capsaicin. Despite its name, capsaicin actually belongs to a group of seven substances known as capsaicinoids. It reduces inflammation and the associated pain, which may have been caused by coughing and affects both your throat and your chest.

People have been using apple cider vinegar for years to treat colds and coughs. Apple cider vinegar eliminates bacteria and poisons from the phlegm and soothes your throat. Additionally, it encourages blood circulation, which speeds up the delivery of blood nutrients to the inflamed areas.

Apple cider vinegar will eliminate toxins and germs, accelerating the healing process; ginger will reduce throat inflammation and facilitate easier breathing; cayenne pepper will alleviate coughing pain; honey will eliminate free radicals and provide a protective layer; and lemon acid will effectively cut through phlegm.

How Amish Cough Syrup Is Used

You can take this as often as you need it because it's made from FOOD. Anyone under the age of one however can't consume this recipe because it contains raw honey.

Ingredients

You can start learning how to make your own natural cough remedies right at home. You may already have the necessary items in your kitchen, but if not, you can always purchase them from your local supermarket.

Four tablespoons of hot water

Two tablespoons of local raw honey

Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

One tablespoon of lemon juice

One-sixth teaspoon of powdered cayenne pepper and ginger

Directions

Mix the apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and honey together in a mug. In a different bowl, whisk your cayenne pepper and ginger powders together. Then mix the powders into the wet ingredients.

Heat water in a small pan until just before boiling. Add the hot water to your mug of natural cough syrup and stir until everything is mixed well. Drink and enjoy.

Again, you can drink this as often as you need it, as it is a natural food remedy.
